Al and I have decided that we want to have the birds live in an aviary setting. The birds are out almost all day on top of their cages and get along very well.

Ive been looking online at both indoor and outdoor aviaries and cant find any the size i want(VERY BIG) with the proper bar spacing.

Does anyone have any suggestions for places i could look that sell some.

Is it possible to built our own if the proper research is done?

Hi Camille! :wavey:
Yes, it's very possible to build your own indoor aviary - :)

A friend of mine built there's - to fit a spare bedroom - I think it was 8' tall x 3' deep x 6' long. She kept Bourke's and Lovebirds in it. Fortunately, the lovebirds didn't hurt the Bourke's.

She could walk inside it - or just open 1/2 the door. It had a slick "luon" floor with lots of aspen shavings that she cleaned up regularly. the cage was made from 1x2's, 2x4's, plywood / luon backside, luon around the bottom 30" all sides, and 1/2x1" wire. I think it cost her under $150 to build it!!

there are many other home-built designs - with photos and instructions - I just don't know the links to them.

I don't know what your budget is, but would one of these work? They're pricey, but big.

It's where I do my bird shopping, and I've never had any major problems with it(it's a yahoo based store, so the stock level never shows, but if anything has been out, the owner has always sent an apology and asked if I want a refund or a different item for around the same price, I've never been left disappointed!)

Id consider doing something like forst coco when we own our own place OR have a room just for the birds. The babies are always being bad and flying on my head when im at the computers so i can only imagine if it was bed time(If they were in my bedroom) and in the living room theres no door so they could fly into the bathroom(toilet and drown) or into the kitchen where there might be a hot stove on.

But yes i would love to just have a bird room in the future with all sorts of stuff hanging as well. a mix of fort coco and roxie and Marlyns bird room.

Block off the living room doorway with a bead curtain.... keep the toilet or bathroom door closed. Are you still at the same place? 'Cause I'm having a LOT of trouble picturing a huge aviary in there... The layout's not exactly great... :shrug2:

I made a smallish indoor aviary many years ago (pre-canary) when I had 2 cockatiels and 2 parakeets. It was 4ft long, 4ft wide, and 3ft tall. They seemed to enjoy it, but I advise designing an easy way to CLEAN it. I think that is often the problem DIY bird cages run into - how to clean it.

Just my $0.02

Try doing it the hard way and you'll regret it. I tried sectioning off part of the bedroom, and as the screen began to come down, the mess soon followed!!!
