I bought a severe macaw Pickles last feburary. He was deemed a biter due to the fact when he was at the pet store, people would poke at him thru the bars:( What would you do? Anyway I went to see him and sat and played and talked and we decided he would go hom with me. Yes I have several scars on my fingers, but now he is the most loving baby I could have hoped for. He can say a few words. He loves to kiss and I'm teaching how to shake hands I really got lucky twice.:) I never thought, he would turn out so wonderfuuuuuuuuuuuuul.:agree:

I am glad he came home with you. I believe Sadenna also has a severe macaw. You two may want to get together and have a severe chat. Hey, that sounds cute! I would sure love to see pics of your babies.

actually I have an Illigers, keebler gets mistaken for a severe all the time..the difference is size and severes have the macaw facial feathers where illigers are not as defined. But Minis are great keebler gets himself all wound up, today he was sitting at the computer with me drinking my OJ..he would ask me "mmm that taste good??" then proceed to drink and then say really loud while his head is in the glass "That taste good" he loves juice and he loves it when I drink Ice Water he will pull cubes of ice out of my glass play with them and then put them back in my glass, then he would do his pretend sneezes and if i told he was not sick he would just laugh like crazy thinking he is just so funny..lol I love the little guy Minis are so much fun...I am so glad you got that severe..I agree if you had people poking their fingers in your cage you would bite to..some people just have no respect for animals and the adults are worse than the kids sometimes..

Hi, Angelbunny, and welcome :)

Until I rescued Harley last weekend, the bulk of my experience/exposure to macaws was many many years ago. When I was a teenager I worked in a large shopping mall that had a pet shop and I would visit Carlos, the scarlet macaw, every day on my way to and/or from work.

Carlos was a biter too - lifelong pet store bird, in his late 20s when I met him. He did manage to develop relationships with some people, I was lucky enough to be one of them. Even after I stopped working at the mall after 2 years, I'd still visit him when I could and even if weeks or months had passed, he'd remember me and do all his little behaviors that we did together, for me. It's amazing how stupid some people can be when it comes to sticking fingers etc., into the cage of a large, potentially dangerous bird they've never met before - and Carlos nearly severed a man's finger once after being teased. He'd also been fed a variety of 'treats' that nearly killed him, including some chewing gum which he swallowed and had to have surgically removed, and he'd been given narcotics too by stupid idiots looking for a cheap laugh... poor thing, it was amazing that he liked anyone :( Even more of a miracle that those things didn't kill him.

I don't know if Carlos ever found a loving home - the only redeeming thing for him is that he had his 'fans' who visited him and who loved on him every day, but I always felt sorry that he had to endure so much stupidity. Store staff did their best to keep him safe, but it was a busy store with lots of people and he'd get teased when nobody was looking. He'd also learned to mimic some bad words over the years, and I'm sure he got a real kick out of the shock value he could garner when he'd drop an f-bomb in front of some yuppie mom with her kids asking if "Polly wants a cracker?!" I have to admit I got a chuckle out of that myself :funny: I'm sure if he ever did find a home it was with one of the 'regulars' who spent time with him every day, and could live with some of his 'bad habits' aquired over the years - the screaming, the swearing... not everybody wants a bird that can holler obscenities that the whole neighbourhood could hear! I'm sure there's somebody out there who could love him as he was (I did but couldn't afford to bring him home - and I lived in an apartment at the time!)

I'm glad that you have adopted another 'pet store bird' and he has a chance at a stable and safe life - I often wonder what happened to Carlos, he'd be in his 40s now...

I'd love to see pictures too - I am unfamiliar with a severe macaw... let's see! :)

Cheers,
Jenn
