Pi are weird. They have different body language from most parrots I've known.

Most notably, pi strut! They fan out their tails and lift their wings just a bit, then fluff out their faces, lean way forward and march around their territory.

I think of all the types of Pi, feathered ones are the best (I'm not allowed to do that processed sugar thing).

Fabulous!

...for the aviary - Maxi's probably, depends what we can get hold of that come with the right documentation (ie not imported or whatever)
Hey, do you feed vitamin A suppliments? been reading Rosemary Low's book on Pionus and she reckons they need vit A which helps to prevent them getting aspergillosis and similar fungals. I happen to know of someone with a Maxi Pi that has Aspers.. it just concerns me a little.

I don't give any special supplements, but then Johnny is housed indoors. If you're concerned, go ahead and give the vitamins, I'd say.

I had originally wanted a maximillian pi, but then Johnny needed rescuin' and here he is!

Is johnny affectionate, or does he prefer his own space?

birdnerd

When Johnny was younger, he was very affectionate.

When he hit adulthood, though, that changed. He wants very much to be in the same room with me and will yell "MA!" if he knows I'm elsewhere in the house, but he doesn't like to be held a lot. Now and again, however, he would very much appreciate a very, very, very long brain massage.

sounds just like an amazon yes pi's are definantly different they also wheeze when nervous or excited and this wheez has sent many first time Pi owners to the vet for fear something was wrong with their Pi..I love Pionus I am very fond of Bronze Wings and Blue Heads....and I love their smell..Pi's have this odor that many Pi' owners fess up to smelling their Pi's all the time I have to admit it's a nice smell

That is exactly what my vet said about Pi's. When I went to the vet's she was telling me a lady was in earlier with her Pi with a wheezing problem. She was explaining to me what she told the lady. Pi's wheeze when excited or nervous. That was the first time I had ever heard that.

Yes I read about that, but the thing is they are prone to respiratory diseases I believe which makes it a bit ironic - you're going to be especially vigilant if you know a particular species is prone to a particular illness.

SadennaAndFlock

yes they may be prone to it but you can't go running to the vet anytime they wheeze that would get expensive I am not saying you shouldn't be concerned ..I would think once you have owned a Pi long enough you would know the bird and know when it was just wheezing due to excitement or stress or actually had a respitory illiness.....

Amazons strut, too? Interesting. I think Johnny's a male because of his territorial behavior and displaying (to my girlie tiel). Anyone have a _female_ pi who does territorial stuff?

The respiratory ailments pi are prone to are mainly fungus-related. Keep their home free of fungus for joy-filled amusement.

The pi odor is very different.

Another weird quirk of pi:when they fluff up their faces ... they're not wanting their heads rubbed. They're about to attack.

Sadenna: Does your pi like to go spelunking under towels and blankets and stuff?

unfortunately I don't have a Pi myself but I love them bronze wings and blue heads are my faves...I have been around them and did alot of reading about them when hubby and I were looking to move up from just tiels to something different..well instead of PI we wound up with conure and still don't have a Pi lol. I was reading your post that their respitory problems come from fungus in a home I believe thats Aspergilliosis they get it from mold...I had done some reading on Asper and the one species of birds I read they seem to make a point of saying how suseptable they are to is Jardines I always thought it was odd they would make a point of saying it with this particular bird when I thought all species of birds can have problems with it.

There is actually a baby blue headed pionus at work just barely pinning that I am so in lov with he is such a character he shares a brooder with a white capped pionus and in the morning when I bring them out to be fed this little devil trys to climb out all by himself I can tell already this one is going to be a handful...lol now I need to convince hubby we need one...

birdnerd

Of course you need one! You have most of the other color categories nailed down. A pi would be perfect! ;)

I have a PI too!!! Well, she's sick right now but at the vets today I got to see lots of the PI strut.LOL Always bad when she does it and you better watch out especially with that puffed face. She wasn't too happy with the tech that grabbed her with a towel and boy she chewed her out every chance she got for the 2 hours we were there. Shes a WC too Birdnerd.;) Definitely not shy about expressing her feelings LOL On a happy note I got to give her plebnty of scritches today and took full advantage of it normally she tries to eat me every chance she gets. She's my hubby's bird all the way and noone else is good enough for her!:funny:

Pi do seem inclined to pick 1 or 2 humans at most. Johnny would allow only me and another coworker, Efren, to handle him. All others will withdraw a bloody stump.

I'm sorry to hear your squirt is not a well clown. Here's hopin' she recovers sooner than later.

The fluffed face as a warning signal took some getting used to.

Yeah when we got her she was in with another Pi. The other one was running around puffed out and doing the strut. I walked away thinking we should have gotten the other because it seemed to like us. LOL WE didnt' know that meant get away at teh time but I'm sure glad we brought her home instead. LOL

Is your pi part raccoon? Johnny dunks everything, including himself, in his water bowl.

NO but I think she's part chainsaw:funny: That little buzzard is a wood chewing machine.LOL

Johnny, multitalented boy that he is, has twice chewed through perches he was sitting on at the time. Now he has manzanita perches, which has slowed that down. :D

It was great to read through this old thread! Yes, I can say I had to learn the hard way that a Pi's fluffed up, "cute" looking head actually is a warning signal: Watch Out! Be ware. Approach with caution.

Mojo does the fanned-tail, Pi strut, too. Wheezes (not aspergs, just excited) and smelly, oh so wonderfully musky (I am one of those closet sniffers! LOL)!!

He is my love. Acrobat, monkey, talkative to no end. He is a bit cantankerous if the mood suits him, and I respect that. He is also very genteel.
