I was just wondering for the fun of it, what are the most common bird names you have heard for pets. And how did your bird get its name?

I just joined this board less than 3 days ago and i find that i am certainly not the only human owned by a "Scooter"... not that i thought i was being particularly brilliant when i named him, but when he was still covered in down, his method ov movement was to propell himself across the brooder bottom on his keel with his leggs out behind him like a tiny dual outboard motor. Basically he 'scooted'. He also napped in a TP roll because he wouldn't stat cuddled inside anything cup-shaped and would bail out almost immediately. But instead of naming him Scott or Exeter (the two cheap brands of bathroom tissue we buy) he was named for his locomotion technique.

I named Nomar for her resemblance of Nomar Garciaparra....sorta. She just looked like a Nomar for whatever reason. The name popped in my head the first minute i saw her- before i had her DNA'd and she turned out to be a girl... another interesting thing is the pyrrhura part of the classification of her bird type, so she became Nomar Garciapyrrhura

Happy, the cockatiel is cranky. But my daughter named her Happy before we found out she was going to be so cranky or we'd have probably named her something more fitting. I try not to tease Happy with nicknames, just like some people don't take humor too well, i am sure birds can be much the same and if Happy is the kind of bird some people are, a teasing nickname will only make Happy more Cranky... but i can't help calling her the Hindenbird cause she's so chubby!

Bob - because he was newly weaned and still bobbing up and down in begging fashion - out of habit when we first got him
Basil was already named when we got her she was 5. clearly named before she was sexed!

Ollie because he had little white spots on his chest when he was a baby and he looked like a baby owl, there used to be an owl puppet on kids TV when i was young called Ollie Beak and it just fitted.

Toto We were discussing names for him as he came to us as "Charlie" which I hated, we couldn't agree I liked Koko but Dave didn't, then Africa by the band Toto came on the radio and we both looked at each other:eek: that's it Toto after the band. Not after the dog in Wizard of Oz as some may think:funny:

This is a neat and fun thread!! Since most of our birds came to us as rescues and had names already, we kept them in place- 12 out of 14! The rescues that didn't have names:

Spanky (quaker) He reminded me SO much of Spanky on The Little Rascals!! Little round head, little round eyes!

Kate (quaker) She was part of a no-name pair, so we called them Kate & Leopold!

Akeela got her name by looking up female african names, and found this which seemed so fitting for her:

<TABLE><TBODY><TR><TD>Akilah</TD><TD>AH-kee-lah</TD><TD>intelligent, one who reasons</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

I changed the way the name is orginally spelled to the variation of how it is pronounced. If someone just looked at the way it shows in African, it almost looks like you would pronounce it A-kill-ah and didn't want it to sound like someone was calling her 'a 'killer' lol. Her nickname is Superbirdie :p

Sinbad seems like a common name, which I adopted him, so did not get to name him, other than "buddy" for his nickname. :D

Turkey was also adopted, and seems like that may be a common nickname for a Too, hehehe, so it is quite fitting for him ;) and his anticts.

Holly: Her red tail matches the red Holly berries of a holly bush.

Kilroy, our FEMALE Bourke's: Steve namer her, when we thought she was a boy: She kept peering over the top of the black seed skirt of her cage... run around the bottom and peer over the top like the little cartoon character from WW II named Kilroy when the soldiers would write "Kilroy was here" and leave the little drawing of the face peering over the edge.

No story for all the rest... too many....

Pepper, YNA, was already named when I became her dad. The more I learn about her, the more befitting the name. She can be a real #$*^@ some times and be really moody, hot headed and hard to read. Whomever named her must have gotten to know her personality b4 naming b/c it fits sooo well

Hmmm
Sinbad,,,our 'Too,,,dunno why,,,it just happened i quess,,worked for 25+ yrs! LOL:shrug:
Gumby , Blue front 'zon- When he was at the shop my sister worked at, (i managed the other store in the two store "chain")she called me up and told, me
"I don;t want you to come over and buy it"(she musta knew better LOL) " But we have this real sweet blue front here, very gentle, etc." He/she was with a hatchmate named "Pokey" ( a kids claymation tv show a while back, Gumby and Pokey)so that's where the name came from.Gumbey's demeanor changed right after he/she became sexually mature,,,pretty much dislikes me,(major caregiver),but tolerates my wife better,(very minor caregiver) talks some, and carries on a lot, but really gets to dilating it's eyes when i get near,,,

Lil Sinbad- senagal, adopted from my sister, before her, came from Hawaii, not sure of why it was named that, but the name stuck over all this time,,,

Coral- the new Bourke i got from Shirley, named mainly for the color of it, and i felt it would help get the bird in the house, as i did not tell my wife i was bringing it home,,,we have saltwater fish/corals etc,,,,,my wife is still attempting to rename it,,,i still vote for "Coral" just cuz,,,LOL

Well, that's all of them,,,(for now,LOL);)

Our firsr nanday conure was named Bart by my husband because of her black face he named her after Black Bart the outlaw. She was a courageoous outlaw that flew in and took captive our hearts.

My husband named our U2 Elvis. For his extrordinary umbrealla flair with a strong desire to show off and entertain most anyone. Elvie named himself "Elvie" so Elvie, he is. That is the only bird named Elvie that I have heard of.

Lockheed: When I first got her many moons ago, she could fly very, very well.

Freebie: I didn't have to pay for him.

Johnny B. Good: pre-named.

Napoleon: Named becuase he was so short! He was extremely commanding and wanted all the attention. He liked to stretch alot by placing his wing across his chest, which we found adorable.

Seamus: We're an irish family, and we always thought this was the coolest name!

Carlo: My dad looooves the movie "The Godfather", and the line "Hello Carlo". So, there you have our blue crown conure. ^_^

Boss: my handraised alexandrine. He was so bossy especially in the morning when I went to replace his seed dish! He'd actually pick the dish up for me and then the clean dish he'd pull back onto the cage stand! And if I dared to touch the dish after that or my albino went near the seed dish ( I ended up having 2 seed dishes bcos of this), he'd dilate his eyes make alot of noise and hang both his wings down a little ( I think to make himself look more bigger!) Other than that he was the nicest parrot who loved cuddles and bathes!

Beanie: my handraised albino ringneck. Originally was bino and kind of went to beanie.

lol... Mitch got his name because when my husband first rescued him and brought him home, I didn't know much about different types of cockatoos... but I remembered doing a school project on Major Mitchells, and knew they had lots of pink on them.. so we just called him Mitch until we worked out what he was and found a better name for him... but then he started calling himself Mitch, so we kept it :)

Nicknames - Psycho-chicken, Emohawk, Fluffybutt, Squawky (depending on his mood!)

Bailey, our Sun Conure, flew into our back yard and adopted us one evening. For about 3 days he didn't have a name. I called him "Bird". We were trying to think of an exotic name for him to go along with his beautiful red/orange coloring. But, nothing seemed to work and Greg and I couldn't agree. So, we searched the Internet for a list of bird names and found Bailey. It works because I can still call him Bailey Bird. I kept calling him a "him" because I felt sure he was a boy. After we got him DNA sexed, we found out we were right - Bailey is a boy. But, Bailey would have worked for a girl too, I guess.:funny:

When Bart flew into us hubby named him/her Bart. When we had DNA test taken he/she was a she. We decided we had a tough little gal named gal named Bart. So Bart she remained.:beerchug:

I originally thought Lockheed was a male (long before I figured out how to tell boy tiels from girl tiels). She plopped an egg from her perch ... and that solved that question. O.o
