Hi my name is dee, i'm from far north queensland and happened to stumble onto this site. Seems amazing! I've only just started 'getting' into birds and am currently breeding 2 pairs of ringnecks and hopefully my cockatiels and red-rumps will be doing well in the spring. I registered as this seems like a great place to ask questions and generally talk about birds!:emot-danc

Have fun and look around. Better watch out, this forum can get addicting.:emot-danc

I guess i'm addicted already. Thers just so much 2 read in this website! As i said I'm just starting breeding, my green pair of indian ringnecks have laid 2 eggs in the last couple of days, I'm over the moon about that! My pair of blues are split to lutino, they hav'nt started displaying or anything yet but I give them till the start of spring or else I'l just have to wait till nex year I guess! I'll have to take pics of them all, esp my cockatiels as I'm not quite sure what they are (as in describing their colour). I've been researching the web endlessly to figure it out tho. I was'nt really interested in cockatiels, but a friend who bred them as a hobby was getting rid of their collection and I just couldnt help myself. I got 2 off them, 1 m and 1 fmale. the girl had feathers plucked off the back of her neck, but I think that was from the overcrowding at her last home and I treated them both for worms and mites. And I added another cockatiel. as I've been told I now believe birds are addictive!

Thanx. Beautiful picture!

Does anyone happen to know if male ringnecks help their girlfriends incubate?

And I've just achieved in finally getting all my birds to eat vegies and fruit even the cockatiels! Some of my birds came from breeders who jus fed them a simple seed diet, and they would'nt touch the fruit or vegies i added to their diet. Their curiostiy mustve got the better of them!

As soon as I get the chance to burrow my friends digital camera I'll send you fotos. I just love waking up in the morning and feeding and talking to them. All my birds are in aviaries in my back yard, and I think they enjoy me talking to them, they're scared of my kids (I have a 3 yr old and 4yr old) and my other half but seem content when I'm down there. And I've had people tell me aviary raised birds are indifferent to their keepers. Obviously a lie.

Also does anyone know of ways to dissuade hawks/falcons from landing on cages and scaring my birds almost into shock? 1 of my aviaries is suspended and has a 3/4 tin roof and a hawk lands on the wire every couple of days. As soon as I realise the hawks around I sit on my back stairs and scare it away. But the first time it landed there, my poor ringnecks were crashing all around the cage and when I got down there they just sat at the back shivering, I was so worried I was checking them every 5 min after that to see if they were ok. I'm worried that the hawk might come round 1 1 day when I'm not home and my birds hurt themselves.

Hiya stranger!

Keeping the hawk off the birdhouse, hmm...

A couple of notions, but I don't know how well they'll work ... if they work.

1) put some windsocks up there. Maybe the movement will shoo 'em away.
2) Is there a higher perch in the area?

If they're going there for free lunch, you might instead consider giving the ringnecks a visual block so they can't see the hawk. That'll keep 'em from flippin' out, hopefully.

thanx BN, the hawk was back this arvie, this time trying to get my cockatiels. My cockatiels are in your usual walk-in aviary, and the hawk was on the side of the cage trying to attack my cockatiels. I'm scared that theyl drop dead from fright. I'l have to try the windsock idea. The ringnecks can fly from the opened end of the cage to the covered end where there nesting boxes are, but they seem to panic and just fly aimlessly smashing themselves in2 the wire walls. When the hawk tried to get my cockatiels they panicked too.

The pleasure is mine:dance: . its taken me ages to find something like this. the last chat room I was in I got kicked out bcos I got upset that no1 was talking actually about birds just rubbish. I told them this and than I was banned. (:o I'm not a bad person tho! They were acting like idiots). So its great to meat a great bunch of people like all of you who I can talk to.

By the way this weekend, on sunday I'm going to check out a local bird club, and I can only hope they're all as nice as you lot are.

And as soon as I can I'll get fotos promise!!!
