I have a self cleaning oven and haven't used it since getting Bailey. But, it's about time to clean the oven and am in a quandry about what to do. Will it hurt Bailey? Should I keep Bailey out of the kitchen or out of the house completely? How long after the cleaning is done is it safe to bring Bailey back in?
Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you!
I have no idea how long it will take to have the house fume free! I am glad you asked, I would guess, you should close off the kitchen from the rest of the house if possible. Then you need to open your house up for good air flow and maybe turn on the air or, and some fans to help blow out the toxic fumes.
I do not have a self cleaning oven for that reason. You may even consider cleaning it manually to prevent as many toxic fumes from escaping.

I don't do it. Either they are out, or I do it myself.
Better safe than sorry. Not just the fumes from the teflon coating, but it also burns off the other junk......which is no good either.
I say, if ya got a friend you can visit for the day, do it that way, or do it manually w/good ol baking soda paste.
I have also used a mixture of baking soda and corse chunks of coarse salt with enough water to make a paste. I have had good success with this mixture and a slight steel wool pad if needed. Another thing that helps loosen a a burnt on spill is a tsp or so of coke cola applied directly on the spill. Let it sit about 5 or to min to activate the burnt on food. If a bad spill. try it twice. These do the trick for me.
I usually apply the mixture let it stand about 10 minutes then start to wipe clean with a sponge or strong paper towels. If a spot has been spilled I go over that again, then is when you may need a little scrubbing with a steel wool pad. It cleans mine beautiful and is fume free.

The first time you use a self-cleaning oven is supposedly the worst. Take Bailey out of the house for sure.
Use the oven's self-cleaning feature just so it's used.
Air the house out.
Bring Bailey back inside. Choose a nice day of course so you don't have "baked bailey" for dinner.
Then, the next time you use the self-cleaning feature, take Bailey out again, see if the fumes are the same; they probably won't be... and then see what you think.
I never use the self cleaning feature... even when I didn't have birds. I'm just too old-fashioned I guess. :shrug2:

I have read that the birds should be out of the house for at least 24-48 hours for the fumes to completely leave which means having all your windows open and fans to blow the air out they should not be brought back until the fumes are completely gone...personally I don't like the smell when it runs as my mother inlaw uses hers, I don't use the features on mine and never plan to I use good old elbow grease and scrub it out by hand I also use my steam cleaner to soften any hard stuff...this way I don't have to worry about my birds and it may take a bit of work by my oven still gets cleaned

I agree w/Sadenna.. Also... I keep heavy duty aluminum foil on the bottom of the oven under the heating element (elec. oven) and then if anything spills, I throw it away and put in a new liner. I never have to clean it much...
My reason for running it once is so that if someone runs it to "help you out" someday, you aren't as likely to lose your birds... :(

Sorry but what on earth is that??? i never heard of one of those, is there like pixies inside that clean it for you :D
(sorry!! couldn't help it)
I do the same as Sadenna and Shirley, line mine with aluminum oven liners or aluminum foil if I'm out of liners. It helps a lot!

Kristie, I wish it were pixies! :roflmao2:
I've run the self-cleaning feature many times since I've owned the oven, but I haven't since I got Bailey.
What the feature does is it heats the oven to a very high high temperature, basically burning all of the "messes" to a fine white powder so that all you have to do is take a wet paper towel and wipe your oven out when it's finished. (and cooled down) It takes more than 4 hours for the process to complete then another hour or so for it to cool down. Of course, the smell isn't that great. I try to do it on a cooler day so I can open the doors and windows.
I've never cleaned this oven by hand before, so this will be a new "treat" for me. Blech!:foot-tap: But, it'll be worth it so long as Bailey is safe.:highfive:

Wow I never heard of that before. we have a gas oven anyway..
I just clean the hob, and the grill pan. we use trays in the oven so the oven it'self doesn't really need cleaning as such.
