I just need some expert opinions!?!
DOES THIS LOOK LIKE EGGIE BUM TO YOU?! I noticed this last night on Kirby and decided to weigh him - he's gained almost 3 grams (almost at 55grams) and I felt around the vent which also looks a little bit more open and pronounced as opposed to before, and he also has a roundish mass i guess you could call it there.
I also "felt up" Skittles for comparison and she has nothing like this on her.. nor is her vent like Kirby's.
He's eating fine, drinking, bashing cat toys, flying to his cage, he does the airplane dance to Skittle's regularily and she feeds him, etc... no change in behavour.. Just this... eggie bum!!!!
Oh and his poops are fine too! The two of them have also been going after the seashells on their toys more as well.. wh ich is an uncommon thing for them
Checked him this morning again, and its a bit more pronounced than last night when the photos were taken.

Just a few slight financial changes, new car, paying off the couch etc...
It's weird.. I was officially going to do that this week.. and then I found this on Kirby haha
We had a tiel that turned out to be a girl:agree:
That does look like an egg!
We thought our first bird was a he, only he turned out to be a she. It sure looks like that's an egg.

True! :p
So update:
Kirby is gonna be a mommy! It's official, she has an egg and she's healthy too! The vet confirmed her chances of becoming eggbound are slim to none *knock on wood*!! She's a super healthy bird and was hamming it up for my vet too  she would fly up to his shoulder, look at him and just made herself comfy on him :)
I'll make sure to post photos of the new mommy when it all happens :)

That's pretty exciting! Is Skittles a boy? (I guess I'm asking - will the egg be fertile)?

Well i was going to say, that sounds like an egg to me :funny:
Congratulations!!!!. I had a feeling Kirby was a girl, shes such a little flirt
Also back when you had all the "shredding the paper" problems. It sounded more like a nesting type of behavior then just playing and ripping up paper.....Its a girl thang :rotflmao:

WE HAVE AN EGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Christopher just called me to tell me he found the egg :D It fell beneath the grate, but he picked it up and put a towel in the bottom of the cage so it wont roll anywhere.
I haven't even SEEN the egg yet!! I've been waiting almost an hour to go home!!!!!!! It feels so weird to call Kirby a SHE

I have actually removed the egg - mainly because they were roughhousing with their ball and started rolling all over the egg. So again.. it fell between the grate. I also want to keep it :D
What are your guys' thoughts on that? Kirby has shown NO interest in it other than the two bite marks you can see.

I kept my quaker's first egg. I knew it wouldn't be fertile anyway, and I just couldn't bear to throw it away. ;)
Congrats on your baby's first egg. :D

Well, egg #2 is on the way - Kirby is getting really restless :( but still playing outrageously hard hahaha
Hanging off the sides of her cage, bashing the cat toys around and eating like a pig.
I think there might've been something wrong with the firs tone - I had taken it out because she had bitten holes in it and cracked the other side. I picked it up today to move it off my desk and the thing pretty much shattered - didn't drop it, just a light touch.
We'll see how egg #2 goes :)

Sorry for the dumb question (I'm new to birds) do all female birds lay eggs even though they are not fertilized? I have a parakeet that is about 11 months old. When does this start to happen?

No not all female bird will lay eggs but normally the smaller birds are more prone to laying alot and is why you do not take away the infertile eggs or get some fake eggs so they will not keep laying. Everytime you take away her eggs she will more than likely lay again soon. You have to fake them out with fake eggs LOL!

As you might imagine, this topic has been discussed a couple times on the forum! Below is an excerpt from a thread discussion on this (link to the entire thread below). This is found in Dr. C's Expertise Forum (written Dr. Ellen Cook, DVM). You may find this fascinating - it is quite an interesting topic! :)

Hi-You are right to be concerned. I try to prevent egg-laying if at all possible and it IS a husbandry issue. Here is what I recommend to my clients (and have done with my own hens):
1. Convert to pellets. There are many conflicting theories about the pros and cons of pelleted diets. There is a preponderance of research and clinical experience to support pelleted diets as superior for our pet birds. Check this thread for good tips for converting your bird to pellets:
http://www.thebirdforums.com/forums/...ghlight=pellet (http://www.thebirdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5609&highlight=pellet)
This is an excerpt from that thread:
This is the diet I typically recommend:
75% pellets (Harrison's, Roudybush, ZuPreem are my favorites)
10 % veggies
5% fruits
5% "healthy" people foods (rice, pasta, cereal, etc.)
5% seeds/nuts
NO alcohol, caffeine, salt, chocolate, avocado
AVOID (or give only in very tiny amounts) animal protein, dairy, peanuts, Brazil nuts, sugar
===
To convert your bird from a seed diet to pellets:
1. WEIGH DAILY: if your bird loses 10% of body weight , contact your avian veterinarian
2. Place small amount of pellets in the food dish in the morning. Do not feed any other foods during the conversion process.
3. Place an additional bowl with a small amount of seeds in the cage at night, just before lights out (when your bird goes to bed).
4. Sit at the table with your bird and place some pellets on the table. "Peck" at the pellets with your finger, acting enthusiastically and even eating (or at least pretending to eat) some. This stimulates a flock feeding response in your bird and he will often join in your meal..after all, our birds always do want to eat what we are eating, right?
===
2. Decrease daylight hours to less than 8 hours per day-keep Izzy's cage covered the rest of the time.
3. Leaving the eggs with Izzy does not stop the laying process.
4. Remove any toys or objects that Izzy may use for sexual stimulation, i.e. anything that she can sit under and rub her back with. Avoid stroking Izzy on her back, tail, wings-she may misinterpret that as foreplay!
