Ok, from now on I am so OUT on flighted birds! I brought Mister to my petstore to have Renee (a friend that works there) cut his nails. The petstore is really big. Mister flew from the back of the store full force into a window in the front of the store! He got stuck on the floor between a fish tank and wall. He couldn't move, he locked his feet into fists, he wouldn't sit up at all. I burst out bawling while the petsore person felt around his body for anything broken. When she didn't feel anything I took him onto my chest and sat down with him for a minute. He just stayed sprawled out limp. After a few minutes, he started flinching if I moved. Then he started sitting up...after a few more minutes he stood up sort of...

Meanwhile the store lady started calling around to e-vets. I rushed off to the closest avian one (about 5 minutes from me luckily). At that time, Mister was able to climb up my arm to my shoulder. Then vet was able to watch and was pleased that he was able to do that. The vet took him back and examined him. Nothing is broken...the huge scuff/split in his beak didn't go all the way through...no blood in nares, eyes or ears. OMG!!!

So he didn't feel the need to take xrays. They gave pain meds and sent some home with me for the next five days. I was to keep him as still last night as possible and watch for any lethargy (which I wasn't too sure about considering how stressfull he had just had it, and pain meds...) When I put him on his perch to get his invalid area ready, he started slouching his right wing. That freaked me out. He would shake his head like he had water in his ears. I called the vet back, and he told me I could bring him back in. I decided to keep an eye on him. I tried to alter Mister's cage so he could stay in it, but the alterations scared him. I tried to put a perch in the cat carrier that he goes out in...he didn't like that...so he slept on his tree perch all night...and I "slept" on the couch right next to him.

This morning, he seems really good. His wing is right in place, no head shaking. He is sleeping a lot, and in general much quieter than usual. He is eating and drinking though. I am taking him in a little later to our regular vet just for a look/follow up.

With his beak, since it didn't crack all the way through...just in layers sort of...will he eventually rub that off? Or will it grow out? or will it be permenant?

Okay, and about my new baby tiels.. the boy sneezes A LOT. He's foing to the vet with Mister and I to check if I mildly aspirated him, or if he has an infection...I might actually wait to take him in...I'm afraid of having him anywhere near Mister before quarantine time is up...I'm not sure what to do. He isn't having any discharge...it seems to happen the most after feeding, but I don't see any food in his nare.

All prayers and suggestions are greatly welcomed!
Thanks...sorry this is long.

My goodness... what a day! :tighthug:

I dunno how his beak is going to heal, but my Maverick's beak is doing wonderful. He's eating fine, preening, climbing... the only thing I can see now is a tiny 'line' of a crack if I look very carefully. :agree:

I'll send good vibes your way! :tighthug:

I am SO sorry!! Holly, our Grey who is rather experienced with flight did something similar to that once but didn't get hurt... hit the store window, and it was MY fault for offering her to fly in there. The doors were closed, the store owner knew what I was doing and I had her permission... never again. She did not know there were huge storefront windows... and I shouldn't have expected her to know that.

You already know this now, but for the knowledge of anyone reading ... take the flighted bird out in a tiny room for such procedures. Flighted birds can always wriggle away from you, regardless how you hold them, towel them, etc. Unless harnessed, they can get away. If the *qualified* person at the pet store has no such facility, then take the bird to your avian vet for manicures and such.

I'm so sorry he got hurt - and Dr. C will see this soon and reply to your medical questions.

Mister is doing much better today. He was even talking a bit. He is eating/drinking, a little bit of climbing. THANK GOD!!!! He went to see our regular vet yesterday, and the vet said he should be fine w/i the next 72 hours.

As for my Tiel...he is slightly aspirated and now taking .2 ml of Baytril.

Mister is doing magnificently! Yesterday he was climbing all over, talking, etc. His beak is a bit worse for wear, but he has already started scraping the cracked layers off.

As for the baby tiel...he scared me this morning. He wasn't really interested in any formula. I fed him last night at 930, and went to feed him this morning at 9, he took maybe 4 cc's. I put all the fresh foods, millet, wheat bread and cheerios in the cage. He did eat that. And his crop was a little bit mushy when I went to feed, I would guess he had been eating pellets before I tried. I tried again at 11 with same results. Now I am at work till 9pm...but I figure/and hope, that since I know now that he knows how to eat the other foods, that if he gets hungry, that is what he will do. He is stil on .2 ml baytril till Wed for the slight aspiration, so I wouldn't think he could be sick...but I could be wrong.

I am hoping he is just weaning himself, but as I am new at this, any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, normally he takes between 10-15 cc's a feeding (3x/day).

Well Rach, I'll tell ya what. With your thread about Nolan, and how you realized even more how much you love him, that is EXACTLY what happened to me in this situation!

Sara, I'm really glad Mister is doing so well... that's no small scrape there - poor guy - that would have freaked me out. It hurts me to even look at the picture.:( But I'm ok since I know he's doing fine!:D

Same thing when Maverick got hurt... and he doesn't even like us!!

I can't imagine having something like that happen to a bird that actually cares for like you care for it... I'm praying to the heavens that nothing like that ever happens to my little baby Tango... :(
