When on holiday, we happened to get talking to a guy who owns a blue Fronted amazon.
were talking food, and he mentioned that cabbage is poisonous - well this is news to us, we've always fed cabbage leaves to Basil - i don't know which variety off the top me head - Sue you might know which one I mean, it's not really round, but has a kind of 'pointed' end, we get it from Tesco and it comes in a sealed bag?? - could be a sweetheart cabbage??
anyway, I'm guessing the variety isn't all that relevant - please tell me I'm right that cabbage is ok! - (Apart from that too much can give them them diahorrea)

Good question Kristie, I also heard it wasn't good so I don't feed it but I think opinions differ this link says it's OK http://www.parrotsanctuary.co.uk/diet.htmIt will be interesting to see other members comments.
I also read lettuce isn't good but i'm not sure if that's because it's low in nutrients. Mine both love broccoli.

Hmmm. Thanks Sue, I wait to see what the other say!
I too thought lettuce can give them the runs and isn't that nutricious.

Lettuce and cabbage are pretty much crunchy water. I've never heard anything amiss there...

Cabbage has never been listed on any dangerous food list that I've read. Below is a link to safe and dangerous foods I have listed under "Many Practical Links" listed in "Preatical Links".

Thanks Jean. I was convinced this guy was wrong but he was an older guy and I didn't want to argue... he said the stalk was ok but the leaves toxic...???
How odd, obviously someone had told him that.

Iceberg lettuce is not good to give only because it is just water and no nutrients, now dark leaf lettuce, Romaine lettuce is fine to give, I have heard contridicting information on cabbage...but I do feed my birds a cabbage relative but not a true cabbage Bok Choy. The best leafy greens to feed are Kale, mustard greens, collard greens, some swissh chard I have read that spinache binds calcium so it should not be fed.
