Ok well I am probably over reacting as usual.....but, I called a avian vet that was also the breeder of Floyd to ask if he was ever vaccinated for polyoma.
She say no, that they do not give any vaccines to birds and they don't need any. Just to bring in yearly for bloodwork and such. Then somehow I mentioned that I also have 4 parakeets, and she asks if they were tested for clymidia. I say no and she says that is really the only thing humans can catch from them. So I mention our family has been passing around a common cold like bug since dec/jan. She suggests we have the parakeets looked at to check if the have clymidia. Is it possible the parakeets have been making us sick ? I just figured we passed it to one another. They have no symptons and seem very healthy. Floyd as well. I called a vet closer that specializes in birds, and ask if it is possible just to give them the antibiotics as a precaution since they want to charge 49.95 a bird and I have 4 parakeets and a moluccan , plus I would have to take in my sisters 5 'teils and 4 keets as well. And that is just the exam, tests are seperate. I simply cannot afford to do all this right now. :help: Am I overreacting or not:confused:

You may be overreacting, but, unfortunately, your symptoms may be consistent with Chlamydophila (formerly Chlamydia) infection....and a hundred other things :(

I would agree with the first veterinarian and recommend that all your birds be tested. The following links have some excellent information:

AVMA on psittacosis (http://www.avma.org/reference/zoonosis/znpsittacosis.asp)

CDC on psittacosis (http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/psittacosis_t.htm)

Toss the parakeets out the back door and take a big sniff of your Umbrella. You will be fine.

My bill will be in the mail.

also, is clamidia reoccuring or once treated is it gone . Do cockatoos get it? The vet I spoke with only mentioned parakeets getting it(budgies). Also the cold does go away but about 3 weeks or so someone seems to bring it back around.

It is contagious to all birds and to us from our birds.

I was hoping I was just over reacting:( I have had the parakeets since dec. if they had it wouldn't they be sick by now? I guess I'm going to have to have them tested it just stinks:p I can get over being sick but I could never forgive myself if Floyd got sick.

From talking to our vet I think some birds can be carries and not be actively sick but not sure on that hopefully Dr C can answer that I know with polyoma some birds can be carriers but not get sick from it...out of all the big main diseases our birds can get psiticosis is at least easily treatable with medication in both birds and humans.
