FIRE ALONG THE SKY continues Sara Donati’s bestselling saga in which Elizabeth Middleton after leaving England travels to upstate New York to a town called Paradise, where she plans to become a schoolteacher. She meets and falls in love with a hunter/trapper, Nathaniel Bonner, who was formerly married to a Mohawk woman. Over a series of three books (INTO THE WILDERNESS, DAWN ON A DISTANT SHORE, LAKE IN THE CLOUDS), the Bonner family has grown, adjusted to their lives, and the children are growing up and seeking their own adventures.

It is now 1812, Hannah Bonner returns to her family in Paradise hoping to heal her emotional wounds. No one knows exactly what Hannah has faced; her husband and son are not with her. They hope time at the cabin will help her return to the woman she once was and give her the strength to tell her story. Hannah’s widowed distant cousin, Jennet, arrives from Scotland to spend time with her relatives, and possibly to convince the man she has always loved, Luke Bonner, that he loves her in return. Jennet married the wrong man once, and this time she plans to win the heart of the man that she knows is her soul mate. And the youngest Bonner child, Lily, finds herself in a troubled relationship. That lends way to a second romance; this time she is extremely cautious.

Meanwhile, the War of 1812 is looming ever closer. The family braces for the devastation that a war can cause, as people they know and love prepare to join the battle. When Daniel is taken prisoner, Hannah, a known healer to the unhealthy, sets off on a mission that might set her on a path to healing.

As FIRE ALONG THE SKY is the fourth book in a series, I think it is advisable to have read the previous three books. The story, while fascinating, contains a list of main characters that is over sixty people long. I spent more time flipping back and forth to keep track of who’s who than I did steadily reading. That made for a distracting reading experience. I do believe had I read the books in order, the characters would have been introduced slowly and in a more reasonable fashion.

I do have the previous three books upstairs, so I plan to pull them all out and read them in order. The setting is unique and sure to please historical romance readers wanting a change of pace. Very few romances are set in the wilderness, especially during the War of 1812. Sara Donati does readers a favor by introducing a fresh, vibrant setting in her romances.
