 Can someone direct me to a link or explain how to towel a bird. I have been putting Pepper's meds in pieces of her food. By the way she is acting again, I'm afraid she hasn't been getting all of the prescribed dosage. I want to towel her and " force " her to take full dosage.:thanx:

Shirley had posted step-by-step picture instructions a while back. I will look for the link. What kind of medicine are you giving?

:thanx: Joe. Just read it and I think I will follow the advice given there and get some "hands on" at the vets. I can have them do a follow up at the same time. It is sporonox for fungus

Good luck! Shirley is very knowledgeable. It was very nice of her to take the time to produce the linked instructions.

Is the medicine liquid?

SHirley,
sorry about the delayed answer. No it is in bead form. The single capsule has ? # of beads. Her dosage is 15 beads a day. I was late in responding b/c I was "cuddling" her. She has been docile today after many days of being very active. I tried cool whip, vet tip, didn't work. She won't go near it. Tried the honey, I think suggested by Jean, same thing. Put them on a small piece of orange, honey to help hold them on, ate the end with nothing. Its like she can smell it or gets a small taste and leaves it alone. I JUST put some in a small portion of scrambled egg, same thing, just leaves it alone. She loves scrambled eggs. I'm kinda frustrated trying to be sure she gets her meds.

Ask your vet if the medicine comes in the form of liquid drops. The drops are an easier way to give a bird its medicine.

Exactly. Which is why I asked. Then just dunk it down her crop.

Otherwise, I'd put it in a pudding thickness of baby cereal, draw it up into a syringe, and inject it into her mouth... 1/4 cc at a time.

Clicker training for kool-aide like this, or honey baby cereal, is a good way to teach them to take their meds.

For Skyler... headlock like for toweling (2-person job) then stick the syringe into the clamped beak (getting the beak open somewhat) and pushing 1cc in all at once worked well. That's pretty much what the vet did as well. He didn't yell, just didn't want to cooperate. He also didn't upchuck it. Or drown.

Yeah... I'm waking Steve at 1:00 and we're leaving at 2. I've given up on going to sleep until we get in the car. then I'll CRASH big time!!!

If I wrote a list of all the stuff I've accomplished since last Weds... and then worked that hard the last 6 weeks... I wouldn't have a lick of work to come back to!! Bu-u-u-u-utttt... still have 4 weddings to edit. Used to be three. Maybe no one will have deadlines when I get back. See, weddings aren't "deadlines"... it's not a funeral, or an anniversary date, or a birthday, or graduation.... the contract gives me 12-14 weeks... I usually take 6-8; I just hope they aren't filing for divorce before I'm done!!! :roflmao2: Which is one reason I'm paid in full before she walks down the aisle.... kinda hard to sell it to someone else! :funny:

I only just saw this after the mad catch up after the holiday.

Neil,
I had to give Toto antibiotics, they were in tablet form so I crushed them up and added to porridge (oatmeal) with honey. I put it into about a heaped dessert spoon and made sure he ate all of it. He didn't have a clue. Oh and I did it first thing in the morning when they are more hungry.

Hope this helps if the other stuff didn't. Good luck!
