I like to use the "Healthy Bird Cook Book" by Robin Deutch. It has bird specific recipes.

I checked back in my orders online folder and only paid $10.85 on Amazon.com with free shipping last July. That price was for a hard cover and not used. I agree I would have hated to spend 30 bucks also.:D

Hello, hope you all don't mind me jumping in here.

First let me say I think it's great there are recipes, books and all kinds of ways to offer food to our birds. I'm not into cooking unless it can go in the microwave. What I'm trying to say is if you're like me and don't have time or enjoy cooking. A healthy diet can be accomplished with out the fuss of cooking, blending, etc.

I say this because a few years ago I thought I may not be providing the best diet or feeding for my guys. I have since learned that they are just fine and healthy with the simple nutritional diet I provide.

Don't feel bad if you're like me and can't or don't want to cook for your birds. Again if you don't want to cook, feed them healthy food and enjoy them. That's why we have these wonderful creatures.

Jim, I wish Elvie would eat like your boys...

Do you suppose, I've pamper him two much? ;) LOL He not only wants most of his veges cooked, some mashed, unless it's fruit or crunchy snacks. He also likes it served a nice warm temp. When I offer him cold he looks at me and says I'm hungry... as though it's not real food unless it's cooked and heated just perfect. LOL He'd starve if he had to live in the wild. I could picture him perched in a tree in someones back yard saying (I'm hungry) (I'm hungry) (I'm hungry) LOL

Jim I too hate cooking with a vengence. Some people have microwaves I have a Jemma, she loves to cook so I find the recipes and she cooks it, I give it to Bucc and tell him Look what your mama made for you. If he doesn't like it then I tell him Jemma made it. lol.

Jean that is too cute, Elvie spoilt, never! just you ask him. lol.

I found some stuff called Mike's Manna Mash on the internet. I make it myself and the birds just go nuts over it. It takes a while longer to make and it ain't cheap but all our birds love the stuff.

I still use pellets and fresh fruits but this Mash stuff has all sorts of beans, peans, carrots... a LOT of stuff that is good for the birds. Probably it would be better for me than what I'm eating too but....

I did a search for Mike's Manna and found it. You have to register on the site but it's free and I haven't received any junk email from him. And he is very quick to answer an email question.

AND he doesn't sell anything. You get everything from the grocery store.

I've heard nothing but good things about Mike's Mash - way back when Shelby first came to us... but I've never made it... I think I was overwhelmed by the list of ingredients and the quantity it made... but now with a houseful... I should give it a 2nd look...

Thanks for sharing, Gary!

When Chloe had her prolapsed cloaca, I read on the internet that it can be caused by pampering and petting her too much. I was shocked and all upset that I might have caused her problem.

When I took Chloe to her doctor, I was whining about it being my fault and how bad I felt and and and... Her remarks to me are burned into the frontal lobes of my brain.

"Gary. Don't EVER feel sorry for loving your bird." Dr. Clubb '2005

And I haven't... Our birds are our babies. They DESERVE to be pampered and spoiled and anything else we can do for them. Chloe gives back a 100 fold for everything I do for her.

She doesn't care how old, how fat, what kind of car I drive, how much money I make or what fancy places I take her. She loves me just the same.

She can make my most miserable day, into Christmas morning, just by hopping up on my chest, cocking her head to one side and looking into my eyes and saying "I love you."

I had an old girlfriend from 16 years ago, come to visit this past weekend. She was amazed at how I "spoil that bird..." I reminded her that Chloe was her name, not "that bird" and if she had treated me like Chloe does, she might not be my ex....

I don't think I will be hearing from her again....

Chloe ain't no beauty. But she's Daddy's Precious Princess and I wouldn't trade her for a show winner !!!

But Chloe is a beauty! I've had the privilege of meeting her - she's a beautiful loving bird... her eyes say it all!
