I've been trying to get a series of GOOD pic of my Amazon and most of the pics turn out yellow to white when I use the flash the camera has :shrug2: . Its an Olympus C-5000. Its a pretty nice cam with 5 megapixel, I just need some hints on how to make 'em come out right. I've tried every mode including sport and the results are the same. I've tried the pause for auto focus, what ever has been suggested, but to no avail. Like Shirley said though, don't cost to learn. N E suggestions????

Neil, doesn't the C-5000 have an adjustment for your flash? I turn mine down to -.3 or even -1.0 sometimes. Your flash is way too bright. You need it to stop the action. But you don't need much.

Mine is a C-5050. See if you can turn your flash down. Also, put it SPORTS mode... the little running guy mode. Mine's also a 5 megapixel. Your pics should look like mine.

Don't give up!

Neil:

Manual: (http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_product_lobbypage.asp?l=1&p=16&bc=2&product=934&fl=8)
left columng: click on Brochures and Manuals

or:

Choose the first choice: Camera Operation: Flash Intensity, and then see page 64 and read it.

For my Olympus, I printed out the entire manual on my laser printer, took it to Staples and had it punched and put together in a binder thing.

Here it is (http://www.olympusamerica.com/files/C5000Zoom_Reference.pdf)
as a .pdf document
What they give you in the box is completely inadequate.

Your camera does everything mine does. Sports mode, shutter speed, and Flash Intensity control.

You are so welcome!

The Users guide that you sent me to is 10X the paper booklet Is that the wrong one??

Neil, I am STILL learning how to better use my digital camera... and the camera I borrowed today from my die-hard FILM photographer friend...he's an AWESOME published photographer and professor of photgraphy at the university IUPUI in Indpls... he still won't use it! I've yet to meet a photographer who is completely comfortable with digital. there's always a lag time, digital is not "real" time like film is. There's lag for focus, and then there's write time while you miss your next shot!

Here's a photo I took of Holly today, one of 19 I took of her. It's a 72 dpi jpg image reduced from a 17.5 megabyte .tiff image that is originally 28" x 42" 300 dpi!!!

I plan to make an 11x17 to matte and frame! I LOVE this photo. I will also add this one to my stock collection that I sell.

No flash was used, and it was on the closeup (macro) setting with either the sports or the portrait shutter speed, I forget which. I loved how she posed her feet (one up, one down) and then looked at me! Talk about lucky! The focus is auto-focus, and the lens is 35mm, it's a Fujifilm FinePix S1 Pro (discontinued and replaced now with the S2 and S3). It's an SLR (single lens reflex) and takes various Nikon F-mount lenses like the film cameras we all love. My film camera is a Nikon. :)

This is far superior to my Olympus C5050, but I can't say the price is justified unless I'm constantly shooting subjects that will be printed 12x16 and larger... for profit.

I used it for 12x18 shots of my son in his ROTC uniform last March... awesome job!

All my printing is done in-house on the Epson 2200, btw, on Epson archival papers, matte and photo luster, depending upon the subject.

Seeing this print in your hand is something else... each feather barb and detail of the poppies is just astonishing. I'll print the 11x17 tomorrow... after I eliminate the house in the background...

Here's an example of a section of the same photo, reduced just a couple inches, to give an idea of the detail... but still, it's only 72dpi jpg and the print will be 300 dpi tiff.

Awsome pics. Maybe with some study and experiment I can come close. I would be satisfied with good clear and sharp with true color

Wouldn't we all!

How often do you go through a set of rechargeable batteries? 2x week? I do. That's how much I use my camera... and nearly all on the birds... or the outdoor birds. And most are tossed. Same with the photogs who shoot weddings... they never show their brides the mistakes.

Shirley, these pic's are amazing.

Dave wanted an SLR when I talked him into a digital.

Neil the pic in my avatar took well over half a day of continuous "snapping" the delay makes it difficult as the bird is usually in a different position when the pics taken to when you first focused. Hang in there and you'll do it.
Toto was getting a soaking and loving every minute of it here are some pics but for each one taken probably 10 were deleted.

I don't give up easily. I need to get into the manual I downloaded from the web. As I said earlier, the one online for my cam is 10X the little paper one that came with the cam. I keep spare batteries charged and digital is free. It will take some practice and experimenting with different settings on the cam to learn this cam. TY for the help and encouragement.

Hi Sue,

I love Toto's pics, especially the first and the last ones are very cute. On the last pic, was he standing on the cage? I have never soon a cockatoo does this. Hmm... very interesting post. I truly enjoy the pics.

I am not a good photographer and my camera is just a normal one. It is very difficult to take pictures of the birds because they move very often. But I still enjoy taking their photos. Once in a while, I have a pretty good one.

I just gave Oliver a shower today since it is very hot today.
Have a wonderful day!

Hi Lana,

Yes, Holly is my Grey model! She is really something with the camera!

By normal camera, do you mean "film camera" and not digital?

Before digital, I used to spend quite a bit on film and processing just to get a few good pics of pets and such. Digital is wonderful in many ways, mainly in that I can shoot 50 pics, toss 45, and keep the 5 good ones, or toss them all and start over. Before putting the birds in the pics, I'll shoot a couple test shots for lighting and such, then add the birds to the mix.

Holly discovered how tasty roses are, so now she eats them faster than I can take the pics!! I guess we won't be visiting any public rose gardens for photo shoots... safety for the roses and for her in case they've been sprayed!

The key to shooting birds is just perseverance and shooting often... they get used to the flash very quickly. take lots of pics to get 2 or 3 keepers.

Look all around the bird... what's in the background that you will be discouraged about later in case the photo is your best ever? Are you cropping the bird's head or tail when you don't intend to?

Thanks so much for your compliments,
Shirley

Hi Shirley,

My 'normal camera' is digital but cannot do much. It is a Canon, PowerShot S400 (4 megapixels). Someone told me I need a camera that can take pictures of a moving object very well. I think it is probably me, rather than the camera, or both. I do not know if my camera is good enough to take pictures of the birds. I have a lot of problems with the pictures I took. Most of them did not turn out well -- too blurry (most of the times), too bright, too dark, etc. Simply put, I don't know what to adjust (e.g. shutter speed) and in what situation. The shutter speed available on the menu options is between 2-10 seconds. I tried the lowest and the highest speeds but could not notice much difference. I normally do not use flash as I am not sure if that bothers my birds (unless it is an accident that I forgot to turn the auto-flash off). The good/okay pictures are the flukes (and very few are good). :D That's why I appreciate good pictures so much.

A lot of times Oliver was in the wrong side of the light but he was being so cute. So I took his pictures and it turned out that he looked so dark in the pictures and the background was very nice and bright.

Is it okay that our birds eat roses? I took some pics of Oliver with my roses while I was still holding him. I am not sure what is okay and what is not. I used to have indoor plants when I had Joey, before Oliver came. I have found later that Joey (who can fly everywhere in the house) was after every plant and flower in a vase. So I took all of them outside the house, just to be safe. Anyway, Joey has survived until today and stays very healthy. On the other hand, I wonder how the CAGs in the wild survive because no one will keep all the unsure things away from them.

Thank you so much for the valuable tips. It is so true. I have found that many times, the action shots have a lot of not-so-good or unwanted backgrounds while the birds are so perfect.

All the best to you,

Lana

Lana, you have an excellent camera... just take hundreds of pics, throw most away, and download the manual that doesn't come with the camera or install the "online" one that comes with the software and study it.

I've written a LOT on how to take digital pics and properly use the flash -- very important to get a decent pic of a bird or any moving object... FAST shutter, just enough flash to stop the action, not too much to over-expose the shot...

We have a photography forum here, and there's a long thread somewhere with Neil aka morgavin on photography... maybe in the Amazon species forum.

Don't give up on your camera or yourself!

My first digital was 1.3 megapixels, no controls at all on the flash or shutter speed, and I have some 4x6 pics that are very good. Just can't make them larger and still look decent -- quality limitations.

I'll spend 15 minutes with a fidgety bird, and an hour with Holly. I use a helper with the flighty ones, and an indoor "box studio" for birds... I have a photo of this somewhere... I believe with my Bourkes photos. Check out the Miscellaneous Medley for my Bourke's family pics... I think it's there. Papa Bourke is wild, so I had to use the photo box studio to make him feel safe and comfy.

EDIT: Ok, some of what I was referring to is earlier in this thread - about flash settings and such. Learn your camera... all of its menu settings, and go to the canon website, support for your specific camera, and download the pdf doc, print it and study it, and you'll learn a lot more about your camera and how to get it to do exactly what you want it to do, then expect to take 20-50 shots for 3-7 good ones, seriously. Birds are a wonderful subject, but not an "easy" one!

2nd EDIT: Duh! And this IS in the photo forum!! I just went looking for Picture Perch, and here we are!!!

3rd Edit: There's a drop-down box where you can view ancient history posts of long ago, like 2 months ago. You may not have noticed that. Here's a thread from Picture Perch you might like:

Oh, about eating roses... I guess it's OK, Holly didn't get sick. There's a long list of safe and unsafe woods and plants in the Practical Links or Elements of Bird Care Forums. Actually, Rose Hips are in Vitamin C, and she ate so many and I wasn't worried about it b/c I've heard they are safe, but check the list, don't listen to me on that.
