For the first time this year we have started using our wood burning stove - Scotty the snow dance you did for us paid off - we received our first few inches of snow yesterday!! My concern is for Peeka when he comes home next week - I have a very sensitive nose and I know that birds are super sensitive as well - the wood burning stove is in the basement and used to heat the basement - but the "wood" and burning smell travels upstairs and I am concerned that this will cause problems????? Are my concerns founded or simply am I worrying too much?
Any help and guidance you all can offer would be great!
Thanks - Patti

The woodstove we used to have in our other house, we never had any smells coming from it at all and it was in our living room, is yours older or newer, would not hurt to have someone come out and inspect it to make sure it is working right, and vented well..

Pnce again, I second the motion. We had a wood burning stove in Oklahoma and we didn't have any smell from it at all. We had someone come out at the beginning of every season and check it, just to be safe. Carbon Monoxide is odorless.
"If in doubt, have it checked out." Gary '07.

Our woodstove is new (replaced old one last fall) - and by smell I mean just when putting new wood in just the momentary smokey smell - we have it inspected each year and know that all is well with it. I have a really sensitive nose and just was wondering if it bothers me will it also bother Peeka. Blu, our parakeet seems just fine and happy!
We used to have a wood burning stove and a wood burning fireplace and never had a problem. I did make sure there was an air purifier and humidifier on all the time in the room Elvie was in as a precaution. Also had a window cracked for added ventilation. We visit friends that run a wood burning stove and there has never been a problem.

Patti...I know that when they burn the fieplaces by my house [every one has one including me,but I haven't burned it in 20 yrs' only faux logs,]because I'm sensitive too, when I take the brats out for there nightly poo ,when I breathe the air outside, my nose is congested for the rest of the night, so I would imagine it has to effect birds as well. Glad that Dance worked out for you, it's been snowing here again since 1 P.M.

As long as the stove is properly vented, it "should" be safe. If your parakeet is fine, that is a good sign that all is OK. I would recommend getting a carbon monoxide detector.
