He was sitting on the corner fence in our backyard. He sat there for a long time scouting for food in the little field behind us. We were looking through our bedroom window which is about 30 ft? I love hawks....they're awesome.

Well, thought I'd share ;) Anyone know what species of hawk this is??

Do you have Coopers hawks in your area? That's what he looks like...
They hunt in our subdivision regularly --

I guess that's what he looks like by looking at other pics of Cooper's hawks. He was pretty big..I also read they feed mostly on other birds

Hawks are so neat.

Sure looks like a Cooper's to me. They like to hunt our feeders in the back yard. Had more than usual this summer...they're pretty neat birds :)

Good Heavens!! Is it my imagination or does he look a little annoyed about something?

lol Andy, maybe he was upset that we kept peeking out our window while he was trying to look for food

He sure looks like he could pick up Maggie May and take off with her, she's only about 5lbs. Not to happy about that :yikes:

i have several of these guys around my work. there have been a couple of occasions in which i have walked within ten feet (by accident) of them while they were mantling what ever they happened to have caught(pigeon, squirrel, rabbit). to be that close and look them in the eye is breath taking. of course it has only happened when i am cameraless:doh: .
if ever i am in a position to work with these creatures i would jump at that opportunity. and die a happy man!

Cool pics. We have a resident red-tail that hunts the area.

I'm with you Jim. I'd love to work with hawks. I think it was before you were here, I posted about it. I was on the deck the red-tail was on my neighbors roof. We're checking each other out, and he flew around a tree and landed on the deck rail about 8' away. I was amazed and a little fearful all in the same moment. They look very menacing up close and personal.

That is a really great picture - they are beautiful birds. I see them on the way to work frequently. They are usually just sitting on a post or branch and you see them out of the corner of your eye.

I'm with you on working with birds of prey. There's just something about them that makes them so captivating.

When I saw him out there, I knew I had to take a pic or I'd be upset, lol. Was such a nice treat to see so close.

(OT) Jim, that's your little grandaughter in your avitar? I remember when she was alot younger, she's so adorable in that pic

I think I remember that Redtail Jim. Wish you had a camera then I'm sure! I've got a friend who owns a rescue up north in Illinios that has rehabilitated a redtail and my other friend actually got to feed him, that was neat to hear about.

Well, I figured it was the same little girl. My has she grown. I remember the adorable pic with a bird. How old is she now?

Acacia sounds like she has many talents, maybe we should be calling her the mini version of an animal whisperer, roflol. It takes talent to catch frogs :rotflmao:

...just last weekend we went to the pond and SHE caught 3 small frogs bare handed. :rotflmao:Catches FROGS! Oh my those cause wort's. That's what the two smartest ladies I knew, my mom and grandma told me... wait... maybe it was toads? Take no chances! I think frogs/toads are in the same family.

Just kidding... my kinda girl.:) She fits your favorite author, Jim, and my tag line.
