View Full Version : What a week

Sorry I hven't been on too much this past week. Please keep Mickey in your thoughts, he's very sick right now. He has spent most of the afternoon on the bottom of his cage. He's already been to one vet today and they took the blood to run the tests. I've also spoken with my vet and unfortunately not knowing what is wrong it's hrd to give effective treatment. He's taking Baytril in the meantime and I have him seperated from the others with a heat lamp to keep him warm. The only good thing is that he was eating a little while ago(I had to put the food on the bottom in a bowl)and is perching for the first time since this afternoon. I believe whatever is wrong is a chronic problem because he was sick just a couple months ago but responded great to the antibiotics, the vet thought maybe he had a bacterial infection that they missed because the culture had come up negative. He will probably be hospitalized tomorrow. Unfotunately my vet doesn't think there is much they can do in supportive care for the night that I can't do here at home and doesn't really think running anymore tests on him right now is a great idea since he has already been to one vet today and other than doing an xray there really isnt any tests he can run that will make a difference between tonight and tomorrow and thinks he needs to rest, relax and stay warm for now. They think it's his liver and all of my other birds are fine and have been fine. Luckily the tiels are in their own room.

Sammy has also decided that snipping and plucking was just too much fun to stop so I feel like my heart is being ripped out watching my beautiful feathered baby who has come so far snip off 30-40 feathers at a time in a matter of minutes. He has been better tonight so I'm hoping he is falling back into his normal routine which has been seriously affected with all that's been happening.

My cat also had a blocked UT (couln't pee pee) so he had to be hospitalized and put on a catheter. He's finally starting to go on his own again and I have to take him back tomorrow to see if the stones have passed or broken up.

I'm rambling. So, It's been a crazy week here with my zoo. I'll let you guys know how Mickey is tomorrow. :( Leah

Leah, I am sorry about Micki. I hope he continues to perk up and it can be taken care of with antibiotics. Glad to hear your cat is getting better.

Poor Sammy, It could easily be he is feeling your stress and this is his way of coping with it.

I hope things get better. :tighthug:

Thanks Jean

Well, Mickey is perching this morning so that's good, I was just worried what I would wake up to but now I'm relieved.

My cat does appear to be doing a lot better. He's 9 years old and I bottlefed him and his 2 siblings when they were babies and found outside. I guess he's just getting older. Poor guy it was just hard seeing him in so much pain.

Just been one of those crazy weeks here and a little vent I guess.

Thank you Majj, I took him to my vet today and he still sleeping on the bottom of the cage, he has lost a lot of weight just in the lasy few days. His gram stain did show strep so hopefully the anitibiotics will help. We decided not to hospitalize him because of the stress and the vet gave me fluids to give to him. He said it usually happens when the immune system is depressed and I won't no more until Monday. Thanks for your thoughts, I'm really worried about my little guy.:( Leah

Hi Leah,
I only just now read your post as the title through me and I've been so busy, I didn't realize anyone was ill and there was so much illness going on... I'm so sorry I only saw it now!

I was in college in 1972 when I lost my beloved male cat to the same condition.. urinary calculi they called it... a common problem in male cats back then that they are supposed to be able to prevent better with diet now. I sure do hope he pulls through. That was the sadddest semester of my life, and my professor of Field Science was so kind to me that week; I'll never forget his kindness. Kee Kee was only 8.

I am so worried about Mickey. I went over to the tiel forum to find his picture so I could see exactly who he is. I'm glad he is home with you. Other than having an excellent avian vet and your good faith and being there with him, I don/t know what else you can do except leave the rest up to the higher powers.

Do you know how old he is?

Sincere prayers and kindness goes out to you, Leah,

Hugs,
Shirley

Thank you both.

I am so sorry about your cat Shirley :tighthug: I think it still is a very common problem in cats, the first thing they asked me was if he was a male. He's doing much better now and his bladder is empty(I took him yesterday with Mickey) thank goodness.

Mickey is worse this morning and I just feel so helpless. I was really hoping with the antibiotics he would be getting better by now. I think it's stress related and not disease related, he hasn't been quite the same since adding the last 2 tiels. I had asked the other vet and he thought that couldn't be the problem but I think it is. The younger male tiel has been courting Harley and she has been receptive which I'm sure hasn't helped. 3 females and they both want Harley, go figure. I just hate sitting here and waiting for him to pass on or make it until tomorrow when the test results will be back. :bawling: I still have hopes he'll get better so thanks for your thoughts I appreciate it.:tighthug: As soon as he gets better the 2 newer tiels will be seperated from the rest.

Never mind me I just have to get this out. I just went and gave Mickey his medicine and he's not looking too good, I want to stay optimistic but I don't think he's going to make it. He's lost even more weight and is just bones and could barely perch on my hand. This is just sooooooo sad!!! and there's nothing I can do. I feel so helpless and Mickey is a very special bird to me even if he didn't enjoy being handled, out of all my birds he has grown the most. It took him a year just to play with his first toy and I was sooooooo elated when he did. Of course now I have to worry about my other birds too. I just want to cry and I just don't understand, my birds are so well taken care of. Just 2 weeks ago he was at his top weight of 105, just a few days ago he was playing and now he's down to 67 grams. His normal weight was around 92 so I didn't think much of his weight loss at first, but once he got down to 82 I knew something was wrong and he has been averaging aloss of about 5 grams a day. This is all just happening so fast! :bawling:

Oh no Leah, I am so sorry:wub: Like Shirley, I was thrown by the title and didn't realise your baby was ill.

My thoughts are with you, I lost a 7 year old tiel before we got Ollie, she showed no signs of illness until the morning of the day she died, we got her straight to a vet but it was too late, she died in the early hours, we sat up all night with her and she died in Dave's hand.
I know you are devastated but please take comfort that Mickey is no longer suffering. We are thinking of you.:grouphug2 Take care.

I just don't even know what to say right now so please forgive my loss of words.:(

Shirley thank you for the picture of Mickey, that was so incredibly thoughtful of you. Do you think there is anyway it could be added to my signature?

I'm sorry I have to go I keep crying and I need to keep it together long enough to bring him up to the vet for a necropsy. Thank again and hugs. Leah

Majj, you and Shirley I just can't express what you have done for me and Mickey, they are absolutely beautiful!!!!!! Is there a way I can print these out(big ones) and frame them so I can put them in my tiel room? I want Mickey to know he will never be forgotten. Oh, here come the tears again, but good ones, thank you for helping me feel so close to my boy even though he's not with me anymore. Thank you!!!!!!!!!! :grouphug2 Leah
