It is alleged by the people at the Animal Rescue that this is a Hahns Macaw.
"Bernie" Hahns Red-Shouldered Macaw, Male. I love to sing and talk to anyone that will listen! (#49946)
I need the Macaw lovers, other than me, to tell me if it is or if it is a Conure. I'm sorry but this is the only picture I have. We went down to see him and the note on his cage says "Owner claims this to be a Hahns Macaw."
Thank you for your looking.

Searched the net....yep.....
He looks like one to me. His size looks smaller then some but that could easily be the angle the pic is shot from. I've taken some of Elvie from a certain angle that make him look smaller then he is.
He is soooooo cute. I hope he finds a good home.

:wavey: Neil! What's new with you?
So are you getting this bird, Gary? :D
Yep, looks like a Hahns (Ara nobilis) to me. They are the smallest of the macaws.
Here's a link to LEXICON of PARROTS (http://lexicon-of-parrots.com/projekt/birds_3.cgi?Desc=E220.htm&Pic=220_1.JPG) for the Hahns.

I don't think we are going to get him. I would like to have every one of them but probably not. He is only $45. How about I send him to you, Shirley ???

Are you sure you read the price right?
No can do, Gary... need a room addition and more time first...
He sure is a sweetheart!
Not a conure. Is a Hahns the same as a Military or are they 2 different birds.

The lady said that he was the same as a cat except you didn't have to pay to have him fixed. That is $45, without the fixing part.
He was all over me and Becki. Just sooooo glad to have the attention. Plus I could have sworn he was saying, "Hi Shirley. You look younger than your sister."
According to the Internet, he looks really young.

They are two completely different macaw species. The Military Macaw is a medium sized macaw. I'm sure Sadenna has a Military Macaw. I'll go look for some more info.
Here you go Sue.

gary, if i lived in that area i would have very little thought before going and getting him. they go for around $600 in this area. unless he has serious psychological(sp?) or other health issues it's a great deal. they are a very personable macaw. big bird in little body:rotflmao:

I told my wife that he was the deal of the century, but "The Gates" were closed. That glazed look came over her eye's and we were off to play with the dogs.
Health problems, I don't know. He has not plucked any feathers. His eye's were bright and shiny. His skin looked good and he didn't feel like he was under weight. I felt along his back and it felt straight. I could feel his breast bone but it wasn't real promonent.
Personality wise, he appeared to be starved for attention. He didn't nip either of us or try to bite. He was active in playing with some cat toys that were in the room. I taught him to step up on a hand held perch in a matter of minutes. When I reached into his cage and said "Step Up" I thought he was going to jump on my hand, he was so happy. He went freely to Becki with no problems too.
He is in a very small cage, like a travel cage for a parakeet. I think in a couple or three molts, he will be a gorgeous bird. Plus according to the internet, he is the best talker of the Macaws, which really surprised me.
Probably, if we didn't have Cheyenne, I could have gotten him. Plus, I'm not going to let up just because she said no... But I can't save them all, DAM IT !!!
The rich people over on "The Island" buy these birds and then loose interest. They are the one's that built this beautiful place for homeless animals. No animal is put down unless for health reasons. I would like to live in the cat rooms. It's absolutely amazing.
We had heard that the rich will bring their Macaws, Cockatoo's etc to the shelter and turn them in. So that was the reason for the trip in the first place. But I was looking for a BIG Macaw, but after reading about the Hahn's, I might ..... We shall see.
$600 in Indiana...??? GOOD !!! That's more ammunition.
After all, she is a woman and she LOVES getting a bargain. That's how I got the garage full of buggy whips and hoola-hoops...

Shirley was right again. I did made a mistake on the price of the Hanh's at the animal shelter. He was $60, not $45. He is gone though. I was just there to visit him.
BUT on the way back I stopped at Paws and they have a Hyacinth that isn't for adoption but they have a sweet sweet SWEET Sulfur Crest Cockatoo that is $60. No cage. Just the bird.
He/she is 5 years old. Perfect feathers. A real lover of attention. The lady that had him said she couldn't put up with the noise of the kids and him so he is at the "No kill" shelter.
It was kind of dark so I couldn't see the eye's real well so I'm not sure. His name is Romeo and he IS a lover. I took my ring off and left it so tomorrow when I go back to get my ring, I'm taking some old toys and ropes and food. It's the same place we got out dog.
The monkey that they had went to a home in Ft. Lauderdale. The guy down there had one for 24 years and it had a heart attack. This was the monkey that she got from New Orleans because of Katrina. She has had it for 3-1/2 years and she found it a good forever home.
YEAH !!!

So the monkey was "found" after the hurricane and they never found the owner?? Wow...

She is a part of a network that took in or foster animals from the hurricane until the owners could have a chance to find them. This network placed animals all over the US. There just wasn't enough room in Louisiana. I don't know how many she fostered originally. She had the monkey and two cats and dogs that no one came looking for.
After two years the network said to put them up for adoption. The dogs and cats went to new homes but no one wanted the monkey. Her husband and the monkey became good buddies. She called the monkey, "The other woman in my husbands life." It was cool to see the two of them together.
But today, when I stop to see her and let her know how our dog was doing, I ask her about the monkey. She told me about the guy in Ft. Lauderdale. I think it's great that she, the monkey, found a good home with someone who knows monkeys.
She isn't the place where the Hahns Macaw was. That was the Vero Beach Humane Society that had the Hahns. But she is on the way back from the Humane Society, in Sebastian. She goes around to the different Humane Societies and gets animals that are going to be put to sleep and that she thinks she can find homes, and takes them to her place. We got our dog there.

Oh gosh...hahns macaws and sulfer cresteds for $60? Geez. Im in the wrong place. I put myself on the list after Katrina to foster or help but nothing wants to come all the way to Ohio. I only want One more bird - I have three large ones and thats too many according to some shelters who would rather keep How many? I am anxiously awaiting the day I get to rescue an Older Macaw, you know, the bird whos owners have died or no longer can care for it? Hubby refuses to let me pay the super high adoption prices of some of these rescues.
