Kilroy is sitting on 4 eggs, and this one hatched yesterday on the first full day of Spring!
The other photos are of the still-not-named-or-sexed baby we got from Kim aka Kimbaleeza who owns Bird Fever. A friend of hers has the parents to this beautiful baby! So... girl or boy? What do you think? The head is very small like a girl... but the grey is very light like our males...

My guess is female, based on the skinny head. How does this one act? My males tend to be calmer, a little more interactive, less adventurous...my females are more vocal...they complain when picked up, etc. Not that that means anything...they're all so different you think you've got it figured out and then one fools you. :)

Shirley,
Congratulations on the new baby! Is this the baby of the ones with an egg when I was there. How exciting!!:emot-danc I remember the one you were hand feeding.

OK -- so far, only one baby has hatched. The 9-wk old is the one I was handfeeding, Janet, and it's several views of that one bird.
You know, for the most part, I think my females do behave as Jennifer described, but the ones that choose to be ultra-friendly don't behave like that... this one is VERY friendly, not nervous at all. But then, so is Ginny-gin. And our wild male is nervous and noisy when picked up.  :funny:

I have had a few of those birds that don't follow the rules. I call 'em my "whatsit" birds. :)

this is kim(female) and rainbow(male) when kim was about a year old and rainbow a couple months older than that.
although rainbows face is light there isn't that definitive cut off line under the cheek and chin that i notice with kim(kilroys baby)
P.S the dates on the pictures ARE INCORRECT, just my laziness to reset the date on camera

Rainbow wasn't one of Kilroy's, was he?
You ought to disable the date display... then you don't have to reset it at all!
You got a normal, didn't you, from Kilroy the 2nd time?

Jennifer.... here's the egg update:
one baby, doing great, three eggs, should've been hatching by now.
I candled them this morning. Two are completely "hollow". The 3rd is a yolk with two bubbles floating around as I turn the egg. Not the air sac, but two bubbles in liquid yolk. I gave that one back to her for another day... but I'm sure it's not fertile as it would be delveloped significantly by now -- it wasn't laid that much later than the first one, although she did wait more than a couple days from the first egg. I never saw her do anything resembling mating behavior with the male, so they probably only bred once, and then perhaps after she laid an egg or two...

Odd...one of my hens does that...starts sitting after only mating once. Bourkes are silly. I guess it's fairly normal though...most bourke breeders get 2-4 babies per clutch. I've had three clutches since December...2, 3, and 3 again. Oh...I just lost my best male today (speaking of silly birds)...he was one of those neurotic males that only fed his mate and wouldn't feed himself. I didn't notice until it was too late. Crazy thing starved himself to death. I love these birds, but they are definitely not without their quirks! :cuckoo:

Oh gosh, I'm so sorry! I've never heard of one "not eating" -- that's really sad!
