Good Question! I save all the ones he molts! They are 11-1/2". :)
He has two long ones and 2 or 3 shorter ones that grow in perpendicular -- sideways... flat...
And under all those, he has his normal tail that you can't see...
Shirley, he is absolutely gorgeous!! how long have you had him?

Two years this summer? Three? I think two...
He must be a wonder to watch him prance with that gorgeous tail. I would imagine he feels very proud of it.

I got him from a finch breeder I now in Chicago who comes to our Indpls shows 4x yr. he almost always has 1-3 of them. They are all imports... they don't breed, they lay eggs in other birds' nests. No clue his age. He's a very hardy happy finch, though, with a beautiful song!

Was looking at old posts trying to catch up, and I came across your pic of Nugget. Are all those feathers his, or is there a Black Palm Cockatoo in the background? How big is this finch? All the finches I have ever seen are about 8" long head to tail. Is this a "tail-piece" (you know, like a hair-piece) HeHe Anne

He's an African Paradise Whydah, and I have two males, and they are excellent community finches, in with other birds. They do need a lot of space - or they will be very unhappy and hop up and down chronically. So their cage is a flight cage and tall more than wide. We've had one for about 3 yrs and the other for a year.
