My name is nicole. I just discovered this site when looking for help for my parakeet. Unfortunately, I had to put my parakeet to sleep this past weekend as it was in complete misery and the vet thought it was the best idea. Anyway, now I am left with two cockatiels that my husband inherited from his aunt when she passed away. We are trying to find out how old they are and what they sex is. Well, hello to all the bird lovers and I hope to find some useful information on this site in regards to the care of the cockatiels.

Determining age of your cockatiels might be tough, but learning their sex shouldn't be as they can be visually sexed fairly easily. You might start a post in the 'Tiel forum about that.
Did you find us by doing a search, or did someone tell you about us? (just curious)
Anyhow, welcome! Hope you enjoy yourself here! We certainly will enjoy having you!

Sue - Thanks. The bird lost its beak and the vet at the emergency animal hospital on Sunday said after looking at the bird and watching it for a while that it was the best thing to do was to put it to sleep, which I did. I have no idea what happened as I tried to get ahold of my vet all weekend with no sucess to have him look at the bird. He was only at my vet three days before this happened. This is the short version as I dont want to take up much of your time.
I am starting to check out this site more to see what is available. It is a good thing that you can talk to other bird owners about anything related to the birds. What kind of bird do you have? I see this site is mainly for larger birds.

Welcome, Nicole. Glad that you found out site. I'm so sorry about your Parakeet. It sounds like you did what was best for the little thing.
We have a Sun Conure parrot; he's not too big. We got into learning about birds because our parrot adopted us by flying into our back yard.
You'll find lots of knowledgeable people on this board so enjoy your time here.
Hi Nicole, :wavey: It is nice to meet you. Were happy to have you join us.

I am sorry to hear about your loss. :tighthug: I know how hurt you feel. I lost our little nanday years ago and I know the terrible hurt of loosing a bird.
I would suggest checking the cage for anything you least suspect that a bird could catch their beak on while
playing. This can happen when we least expect it. It can be something like a circular key ring with a spring opening that holds a hanging toy. If they get their beak hung up on something they will fight to get loose and this can happen from that kind of a struggle.
Our members have a variety of bird sizes, from the smallest to the larger birds. Many of our members have both.
Please feel free to enjoy yourself and ask any questions you may have.

Nicole, I have medium/large parrots and teeny tiny parrotlets, and tiny finches, and Bourke's Australian parakeets, which are only a tiny bit larger than a parakeet (budgie). So, you'll find all sorts here.
Like Jean said, check your cage for anything that may have caught on your bird's delicate beak... :(
