I eat yogurt in the morning and have been giving Bailey a bit. I use a separate spoon for Bailey. He really seems to like it and recognizes the yogurt container. I don't give him a lot, maybe a teaspoon's worth. Is this good or bad for him? :scratchch I didn't see yogurt on the "bad food" list and I've seen parrot treats that are yogurt covered.

Non-fat, plain yogurt in moderation is a good source of protein for parrots. I would use it as a treat in small amounts once in a while. Scooter will just look at yogurt like what in the world is that stuff! But she will eat small amounts of pumpkin mush. I might give her a bit of cheese every once in a while but she is a finicky eater.

In small quatities, it's OK, like a taste, 1/8 tsp. I wouldn't give him a whole tsp. Just watch his droppings... that's a good indicator.

Birds don't have the enzymes for digesting milk products, so it's not like they are lactose intolerant, they simply can't digest it at all. Yogurt is much easier on them than milk. Yogurt in small amts won't "harm" them. :)

What should I be watching for in his droppings?

Runny -- not so good.

They should be B/W (Black or dark=stool, White=urine) sometimes they take on the color of the pellets or greens he's eating.

I share about a tsp of frozen yogurt with Elvie two or three times a week, that is about all his avian vet feels is good for him. His vet says cheddar cheese in moderation as a snack is safe and a good source of protein. Scrambled eggs are also good for them. A couple days a week I make Elvie an egg omelet with some veges mixed in it. That is another good source of protein. Boiled chicken breast is also good for them, so is the wing bones for the bone marrow.
