View Full Version : Simple Cockatoo Entertainment~
There is nothing more joyful then watching a cockatoo entertain them self for hours. Especially, when they love a paper box with a paper sack they can crawl into with a toy to play with.

Yes, what is it with cockatoo's and boxes! And that thing where they put their head on one side and cluck - I take it this is a 'too thing not just a Basil thing!
Must find basil another cardboard box, it's not always easy to find a plain non-printed one.
Adorable little Elvie playing. I think it's a Too thing to burrow and hide:rofl:

I could sit and watch Elvie and his boxes for hours. He always looks to be having so much fun. I wouldn't get any work done, I would end up watching him all day. lol
Wonderful picture, especially love Elvie's face, full of happiness and love

I don't even dump out Chloe's toys from her paper bag anymore. I let her go in and get out what she wants. Sometimes she just goes in and plays in the sack. She usually passes over the $25 toys to pick up the 29 cent round bead with the hole in the middle or the 59 cent rubber ducky....
I think, or I can almost guarantee, in her case, it's a nesting thing. I've been told that it isn't a good thing to let her do that, but she loves to play in boxes, bags, sacks or just burying her head in my hands. Sooooo, unless she starts the "panting thing", that she does when she is getting turned on, I just let her play.
Except for the amount of feathers, that picture of Elvie in the bag, could be my girl. That is the same look of excitement she gets. Exactly the same. And the torn edges on the bag ...??? Exactly the same. Can't imagine where those came from ....
I love that look. It means that she is happy. And when she is happy, I am happy.
We all know what our playful toos like to do. That's why we have such happy cockatoos.
Gary, you are right! Elvie will pass up the expensive toys for a simple one more often then not. He loves our empty plastic bottles and lids of all kinds and colors most of all.

I wish I had discovered Cockatoo's when I was 25 years old. I wouldn't have been married four times.
Every one thinks their type of bird is the best, but a cockatoo owner will sit quietly by and let the other owners just go on and on about what a wonderful bird... so and so is... all the time knowing that Cockatoo's are the best.
And I'm not a bit prejudice..... or opinonated.... Just telling it like it is...

:agree: I love all birds but, just can't let go of that special cockatoo hold these beautiful amazing birds put on you. I think they chose us then silently hypnotized us with their magnificent crest.
I've always said God gave them their crest to reign supreme.

Amen to that, Gary! I was talking to some bird people today and they asked me what kind of parrot I would get if I got another. Without missing a beat, I answered "another cockatoo". Once you have a 'too, they have you...forever
Gary, Jean Dr C absolutely right:agree: And don't you just LOVE the smell of a Too, heaven:wub:

After we eat in the afternoon, Chloe will climb up in my lap and put her full crop against my lips so I can kiss her crop. She makes the exact noise that I make when I kiss her. Then she moves around so I can sniff her neck feathers. And she will just stand right there. She loves for me to sniff her neck. And I love it too. I have sneaked a peak and her eyes are closed and she is sooooo quiet. She stands just a still as she can while I sniff her neck. I absolutely love how she smells. And it puts me in such a happy place.
I said it before and I'll say it again. If everyone had a Cockatoo, there wouldn't be so much meaness in the world.

And, Dr. C, I have had people ask me "Aren't they a lot of trouble ? And I heard they are loud and messy too ?"
For every bit of "trouble" that Chloe is, I get 10 times the love in return. What is loud ??? I think a Macaw is LOUD !! But Macaw owners say..."It isn't that bad." And she is no more messy than any of our other birds. Regular showers during the week and the dust is kept to nothing at all.
I was scared by all the bad things I had read on the net about Cockatoo's. I was very close to not taking her because of those things. But I have NEVER been sorry. From the first day I met her, to the first day I brought her home, until today, the only regret I have had is I didn't discover 'too's, 50 years ago.
I love my Princess. And I always will.

I can understand that, I just sooo wish I knew Toto as a baby and how many homes/how old he really is:rolleyes:

Now to all Too owners..........
Everyone I know who owns (or is owned) by a too will always say they love the smell. I have got to ask "What do they smell like"? I'm sorry to be a bit dumb but never having had a Too its hard to imagine.
Descriptions Please.:agree:
Geez Peta thats a hard one "summer" is one word that springs to mind, i'm off to smell Toto now and see if I can get a better idea.:funny: Actually it's a bit similar to a tiel smell. I think there must be something in the white powder.
If the smell lasts I could send you some feathers;)
Elvie's smells do good. It reminds me of a clean baby's skin with a mild refreshing scent of powder. A healthy cockatoo smells fantastic!

Oh Sue, that sounds great,
With all these descriptions I can just imagine the smell.
Jean I love the smell of babies, yep I'm a clean baby sniffer:doh:
Think I'll go round up Gemini and Leo and have a good ol' sniff :agree:

All of you with Too's love your toos but that's because you haven't met my special Doo(my orange winged amazon). He is just one big love sponge all the time and has always been as gentle as can be. Can't go near him without him fluffing all up for scritches. So HA! couldn't resist LOL Just had to throw this in there while everyone else is bragging about their babies.:D
Jean, Elvie is just soooo adorable!!!!!!!! I just love that expression on his face!

Jean described the wonderful scent of a 'too perfectly. But I think Holly smells just as nice! She has powder, too, and a very warm body with a wonderful smell. I just can't bury my face in her as deeply as I can a cockatoo because her feathers are a little "tighter". If their feathers were clothes, the grey would be in a tweed suit and the cockatoo would be in the full-skirted southern belle dress with crinoline underskirts and pantaloons on their legs!

Gary, I agree 500%-there is nothing like a 'too to lower my blood pressure :agree: I love the way you write about Chloe and I am so happy that you found each other
I also consider Merlin and Shelby no trouble all they give me, but I know that many people do not have the patience and tolerance to be proper 'too parents. That is why I try to educate them as to the care necessary to care for these wonderful, sensitive, incredibly intelligent birds.
Shirley-I loved your description of the difference in bird feathering! I must admit that I never would have thought of Merlin as a southern belle :roflmao2:
All parrots seem to have their unique smell, but of course, I love the 'too smell best-to me, they smell like love

Well... Merlin would have the billowy long white cotton sleeves, the ruffles down the front of his shirt... and Romance Novel hair blowing in the wind!! :funny:

Thats a picture I would love to see.
Think I may have to get intouch with Dr C. I seem to have a cross between a too and a Grey, Bucc also smells of true love. I either have a "Too Grey" or a "Grey Too"

I've never met a bad bird. Some are just more lovable than others. I'm sure your Orange Wing is a great guy. I got private messages from two other Amazon owners that said the same thing you did.
I'm glad everyone is happy with their birds. I wish the whole world could be as happy as we are.
Shirley I love your description of a cockatoos flamboyant wardrobe. How unique! And how fitting the greys suit would be, don't forget the red tie and black vest.

I've never met a bad bird. Neither have I, I don't think there is such a thing.
Thats one word I will never use on Bucc, (bad) If he does anything he shouldn't he will say to me "Bucc good boy, oh noooooooooooo" :roflmao2: It sure does sound funny when he comes out with that. Doesn't matter what he does I still love him.   Nothing could change that.
Wouldn't it be great if everyone could be as happy as we all are. Wouldn't that be something.

Yep my OWA is a special guy but defintely wouldn't describe him as smelling like love. He gives off a smiliar smell to my Pionus. My Greys though smell sooooooooo good. I can just bury my nose in their feathers and sniff away LOL

Me Peta --- as I raise my hand.
Well I think I better put in my plug for Macaws.:D Both boys have a little different smell that I love. Have no idea how to label it, it's just their smell like us humans have smells. No wise cracks, talking good smells here.
Then you have the feel. Oh there is nothing like touching that soft white face skin or feeling it on your cheek. That's haven. Not always so great but still love is when they've been eating peppers and have it all over their beaks and feet. Oh my that's a wake you up call.

Amen Jim...on the pepper thing
Now...I must plug the Eclectus. They smell like a flower....so sweet and fresh...like right after a spring rain...I love it
After reading how wonderful our birds all smell I'd say, we have the best smelling birds in the country.

Its funny that you all have mentioned your birds smell! I was just telling my husband the other day, as im kissing Marlons tummy, that i just love the way he smells!! I dont know how to describe it, but i think the summer smell as mentioned, probably describes it best!!http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/36/36_3_5.gif
I was just going to say the same thing, I loved the "love" description but I was thinking a gorgeous sunny summer's day!!! If they've been outside and had a shower , the gorgeousness is trippled:wub: :funny:
Jim, yes the touch is amazing , those gorgeous soft feathers and skin like velvet, better obviously than velvet:agree:
