We are in the process of getting our wood for the aviary, Andi has finished drawing up his plans, we are hoping to get it finished by the end of this year, The guys won't be going out there until the spring next year.

Does anyone know of any bird safe wood preservative that we can use on the wood. We were going to get pressure treated, but have since found out that this is not good for birds. (Any wood that we have inside the aviary will not be treated, ie perches etc. I want to try to make this as natural as possible for them.) Any advise would be helpful.

You are right -- no pressure treating... those chemicals are harsh and not bird-safe at all. I don't know of anything that is bird-safe... I've seen several beautiful home-built aviaries, and they are all left natural inside and out.

Now, a friend of mine keeps finches, and he has a "Martha Stewart" aviary from plans she made, and that one is painted white. But.. finches don't chew the wood.

Look at this... and take the tour... http://www.aviariums.com/
I disagree with some of the things he says, such as cleaning once per month , but the aviaries have various color finishes.

They are beautiful, and look very expensive. Cleaning once a month eh  my guys get a quick clean up once ............... a day. :funny:

The aviary we are building is going to be outside so I'm a bit worried about the wood rotting. Have to look into the different woods I think.

My plan is to make it as natural for them as possible, I'm making some wood swings and ladders (I know thats not very natural, but the little guys love swings and ladders) Thanks
