We have again lost another feline soul in our family....

Baby kitty our 5 year old cat started having seizures thursday night, it was only one and again only 1 on Friday our vet did blood work and found nothing that was out of the ordinary our cats are strictly indoors only so they have no access to anything toxic of poisonous outside and I don't have any plants inside nor do we use any strong toxic chemicals in our home for cleaning or any other purpose. Our vet was very concerned that it might be neurological and quite possibly the start of epilepsy from my research and from talking to our vet this can happen unexpectedly you don't know when it will happen.

He started baby kitty on small does of phenobarbital and we gave him his first pill saturday morning around 11:30am now pheno can take a while to build up in the system to be effective so we expected one or two more seizures. Nope it wound up being 6 total and after the very last one as baby kitty had not eaten or drank all day so at 10:30pm we took him to the After hours Emergency vets here in town and they immediately started him on Iv fluids a seditive as well and kept him through the weekend, we called on sunday morning and the vet on duty said he only had 1 more seizure since saturday night so we were relieved and said baby kitty was alert and a bit feisty (don't blame him). So Monday monring hubby went and picked him up and delivered him to our regular vet who was going to keep him over night for observation...and he to said baby kitty started to come around and perk up quite a bit..our vet proceded to keep a check up on him through the day...well baby kitty passed way sometime monday afternoon at our vets office, our vet was devastated as he was very optimistic baby kitty would be able to return home with us....

Our vet had run a full blood panel again to make sure it was nothing that we should be worried bout our other cats getting and nope nothing..so we are relieved there...we just don't understand how this could come on so suddenly with no warning at all..And what really makes it very upsetting for us is that his mother is the cat we lost a few months ago to a stroke.....

Sadenna, I'm so sorry to hear your sad news :( xxx Happy playing over the bridge little kitty

sounds like maybe there was some kind of neurological problem going on there.

I'm so sorry Sadenna. :flower: :tighthug: Loosing one pet is far to much but loosing another pet is terrible. Especially, such a young one. Are they ever allowed loose outside? If so, do you suppose someone is giving them something that is feeding them some sort of poison?

Jean,

Our Cats are strictly indoors only and never allowed outside...so it was very easy to rule out poison of any kind weather it was on purpose or via someone spraying their yard for weeds...and we don't keep anything toxic in the house that the cats, dogs or birds can get into.

Sadenna, I am so very sorry to hear of your loss, especially after losing baby kitty's mother so recently :( I wonder if baby kitty also had a stroke-that can cause sudden onset of seizures and there is a hereditary predisposition.

One of my kitties died years ago with a brain tumor and she had sudden onset multiple seizures like baby kitty. In my experience, seizures in cats can be caused by epilepsy, but usually are caused by something for more serious.

Again, sorry for you and yoor family-I know you must miss your kitties very much

Yep that was something else we talked to our vet about since we lost his mom so suddenly with a stroked we are wondering to if she did not have something genetic that she passed on to him...

I think what makes this whole situation so hard on us is the fact it just his so suddenly out of the blue with both him and his mom.

It actually has not been a good year with animals for us in the past few months now losing 2 cats, 2 snakes and we lost our rosie bourke to egg binding as she has been laying even though I provided her with lots of calcium rich foods and a cuttlebone.

I think that is the hardest thing with having animals the fact they with us for a while and then they are gone....
