We have just come back from the Vets with Jess and the outlook is a bit cloudy. She has damaged her knee quite badly, and if she was younger she would need to be operated on, but her age is against her. The vet has given us some Anti-inflamatory and pain killers, which we are hoping will work. Trouble is that they have a tendency to upset the tummy in an older dog and if this happens we have to stop them straight away and take her back to the vets as soon as possible.

Please can you send all your positive thoughts and prayers our way, we really do need them at the moment. Thank you.

Thanks everyone, she's having a bad night tonight I've managed to get her comfy for the time being and she has now gone back to sleep. I have been sleeping downstairs with her for the last few days and will continue to do so until she is feeling a lot better or the pain goes. We have fingers, toes and everything else crossed that she makes a full recovery. We have another appoitment at the vets for next Friday morning all going well.

Thank you all.

Hi Peta-

So sorry to hear about your Jess :( How old is she, and how big? What meds is she on? My Jessie-dog is a 100# Rottie who has had surgery on both knees for a torn cruciate ligament and has done quite well. Please let me know how your Jess is doing.

Dr C Jess has done the same thing as your Jessie did the curciate ligament. She is a Alsatian X Lurcher and is now 14-15. The Vet gave her Metacam which we put onto her food. If she should get an upset tummy we have to stop the medication and take her straight back. I'm so glad your Jessie did well after this.

Jess had a bad night last night, I went upstairs and she tried to follow but hurt her leg again. Now shes sleeping and I'm walking round like a zombie. :roflmao2:

I believe these were taken last year, and she seems to have aged so much since then. :(

Hi Peta-

Your Jess looks like a real sweetheart  My own "first" dog (got her when I was in vet school many eons ago) was a German Shepherd mix who was just the best dog-Jess reminds me of her.

My Jessie is much younger, about 6 now. I understand the difficulty in doing surgery on an older dog. Metacam is a good drug and very safe. We also use it frequently in birds for its anti-inflammatory effect and pain relief. And stomach upsets have been rare in my experience, but always give it with food.

Absolute rest and no stairs is very important w/knee injuries. Sometimes ice helps a recent injury (less that 48 hrs) and then alternate heat and ice after the first 48 hours. Sometimes physical therapy helps a couple of weeks post-injury (complete rest before then).

I will keep Jess and your family in my prayers

Dr C thank you for that, it makes me feel better knowing that tummy probs are rare. She had a shot at the vets yesterday, and today is the first time she has had the metacam at home, although she's not eating properly I have managed to get food and medicine into her. Tonight the stairs are being firmly blocked up. :agree: Yep Jess is a real sweetheart, and as you can tell she absolutely adores Luke (my son)

Thanks Kristie and Shirley it means a lot to all of us.
