mild grade carcinoma (which I'm assuming it's Squamous cell carcinoma) in other words.....Cancer :(
The pathology will decalcify the bone to see how much damage and how far up it had spread. My vet is hoping he got it all since the toe was removed at the metacarpel (whole toe).
We are taking her Monday to get her stitches removed. She is healing quite well and it's looking good. No signs of problems getting around since she's pretty much been walking that way for some time with the swollen toe.
When we take her in I'll talk to the vet more about this condition, but from what I have read it usually effects one toe and is slow progressing. Still not good even hearing the word cancer :(
Here's a pic of m dog, you can see her missing toe, but not too detailed for the squeemish type.

Hi Barb-
So sorry to hear of Schotzy's path report. :( However, her foot looks beautiful to me! And lots of times amputation is curable for some types of cancer. Be sure to write down a list of ??'s for your DVM, so you will remember everything at your next appointment. I always do that when I go to the doc myself-makes it easier for all concerned.
BTW, years ago I had to amputate one of my greyhound's toes in the same way Schotzy has had hers removed. Never kept her from racing around the back yard as fast as she ever did :)
Keeping you and your family in my prayers

Thanks Dr. C
When they go farther into the bone pathology, that should tell how far it extended right? Would an xray of her foot now help to see if there is anything extending in that area. Would it show up on xray for any other toes that could be effected?
I've also heard doing chest xrays to see if it had spread anywhere else, or is that for more progressive cancers??

Barb, I'm so sorry! I hope he got it all, and that if it spreads, it's only on the foot and can be removed. Schotzy has a beautiful face!

Oh Barb, I'm so sorry! But you know, everyone always freaks at the word 'cancer' - I know I do, but it's not always as bad as it sounds, and like Dr C says, it can be very treatable.
Don't start worrying before you need to I guess, apart from that, I'm keeping everything crossed for her (I don't know if you have that saying over there - it's like fingers crossed kind of thing) :)
Hoping for all the best for Schotzy Barb.
As I told you on the phone I am so sorry to hear the news. :grouphug: She is such a sweet dog.
Oh Barb, I'm so sorry:heart:
Try to stay positive, it may not have spread at all, willl be thinking of you and sending positive thoughts and hugs across the pond:tighthug:

Hey Barb-
If she were mine, I would do x-rays of foot, leg and chest, knowing that early stages don't show up, I would repeat x-rays in 3 months. Sorry for the short reply-Shirley and I are off to the state museum to talk about parrots;>)

Thanks everyone  I'm hoping and praying all of it is gone and have no problems later. I couldn't imagine life w/out my dog.....she is definitely one of a kind, with such a GREAT personality and disposition.
Keep those prayers coming!
Thanks for the input Dr. C, should yearly xrays be needed too?

It would probably be a good idea, depending on how she does. I will definitely keep you in my prayers

Barb, I haven't been on for a couple days and am sad to see such news :(
Try to keep a positive outlook though, it's possible there won't be bad news.
I'm sending all positive thoughts and prayers your way.
