I like this style of travel cage...have one for Akeela. Is this size adequate for a B&G?? It's the largest I've seen in this style. Or would a regular dog carrier be more suitable (also have one for the Greys too but smaller), standing up to the big beak?
One cage I've been watching (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=002&item=120003710673&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1)

Besides pvc or tree stand, I would also like a sturdy stand like this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=007&item=170002585362&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3APIC&rd=1)....your thoughts?? Or do you like this other one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7775566523&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3APIC&rd=1#ebayphotohosting) better, being taller with more ability to climb and swing from?? I kinda like the 2nd one better with being able to put toys on the lower bar and more climbing room, no wood ladders to chew and destroy also.

Still deciding on a dome or playtop, I'm thinking the dome would give much more room, and if I have a couple stands for a Macaw, a playtop wouldn't be too crucial? :scratchch
Thanks for your input, I want the best for my baby

All the playstands are nice, I like Dome Top cages personally I think they allow more light and more room exspecially for an active birds, our Military hangs like bat inside her cage thats a dome top and plays with her bell. If you have play areas set up then no a play top would not be crucial.

I like both styles for different reasons, but this is what we do with our playtop cages, and I got this idea from Catherine, Milo's mom (RB2):

Take the playtop tray away, replace it with clear plexiglass, and Voil-a-a-a you have light in the cage! We've done that with all our playtops.

I prefer the second playgym, just seems more room for a B&G to play around on.

Shirley, that is a brilliant idea, to get light into the cage.

I like the 2nd stand a lot better. More places to hang toys from plus, as you observed, not so much wood.

About playtop vs dome - I went with a playtop and have been glad. Even if you don't opt to have the bird playstand up there, it can be a handy place to set extra food dishes and such (of course, you know the bird is going to climb up there and throw whatever she finds...hahah).

When all we had was a dome, I was pro-dome. Then we got a playtop. I've never looked back... I prefer playtops for a zillion reasons.

You'll have to ask Ginny what they travel Taco in... they take her camping quite often.

My Charlie hates his play top and prefers to play on his tree stand. I use the wire kennel in the warmer weather and the dog carrier in the colder weather when I transport Charlie. He likes the wire kennel,he has to see whats going on around him.

Well I don't have a travel cage for Taco :( .

When we take Taco camping we take along a PVC stand. BUT we dont' take her unless it is only going to be gone 2 nights.

As for as the travel cage you had in that link it is only 21" high and Taco is 32" from the tip of her head to the tip of her tail so if you were going to use that travel cage just to go a few min. up the road to the vets it might be ok but not over night or for long at all. The birds tail would get all messed up and I am sure they would not be comfortable in that small of a cage either. I am still looking for something that would worrk for a weekend here and there or maybe a week vacation. I have a smaller cage for Bacardi that works great for her but with a macaws LONG tails it is hard. I think you would need something at least 32 to 36" high. It is hard to find something that tall that is not powder coated and HEAVY. Let me know if you find anything.

As for the stands you picked out they are both pretty big for travel. Do you have a pickup truck or something to put it in when you are traveling?

I agree with Ginny about size. I personally like a crate for traveling in the car long or short distances. The wire gages scare me, I'm always thinking they are going to break a feather when they turn around or worse if they got scared if I swerved or had to stop fast. I think you've seen this pic, it's what we have used. Not my favorite but it has worked. It's heavy but it folds up flat and I think it's 5' tall and like 36"x36". We found it at a garage sale.

I have not seen that one before Jim.

Do you know who makes it? I really need to find something for Taco for when we go camping.

Hi Ginny, haven't seen you for a while. Good to see you.

No I don't know who makes it. I'm being lazy, I could look it up. They sell them at PetsMart and those places. Way to much $$$$ to me. Probably could look at PetsMart site and it may tell the manufacture. Sharon may remember but she's asleep. We have seen them on line so maybe she knows who makes it. I'll ask her tomorrow. You certainly don't want me to wake her up... not a good idea to wake up a sleeping lioness.

Joe, what size dog carrier do you have??

Ginny, I wasn't thinking of using the playstands for travel :p PVC would be used alot easier ;)

I will get the second playstand, still deciding on the cage tho. I'm thinking dome top....but still not sure, lol.

Hi Jim,
I have been around but not posting much. I pop on and then back off. I have been real busy.

Is that cage the one with the plastic bottom that slides out? Is it on a stand? I found one on line that is 26x26x39, it was about as much money as a huge powder coat cage. But we can't travel with something that big and heavy. That might be a good cage for Taco for little weekend outings. I am going to mesure it on her cage and then look to see how she would fit in that space. I am not good when someone tells me a size.....I can't picture it in my head. I don't need anything real big for camping just something to put her in when we leave the camper to go to take a shower or something....so she doesn't turn the camper into toothpicks. When we are in the camper she is either with us or on her stand.

BOY do I know about waking up a sleeping lioness :help: My kids learned at a early age....... when they were old enough to fix their own breakfast to get up and be REAL quiet and get something to eat and not wake me  I sure do love my sleep.

oppps Sorry Barb I guess I miss understood what you were asking. If you were talking about a cage for home and not travel ..... all mine are play top because they are out a lot and play a LOT of the top of the cage. I put bowls of toys up there and they get them out and chew on them or stand there and pick the toys out one by one and throw them on the floor. Then walk over to the edge and tip the head and look at them like WOW how did they all get down there. I don't put the trays on the top. They always go to the edge to go potty. I have paper all around the edge of the cage on the floor and change it at night. They have never gone in the middle of the top of the cage. Maybe that is just my birds but they all seem to want to hang the tail over the edge.

Ginny,

Here ya go. Ours must be an old model, I don't see the fold out top thing. That's good, that fold out thing is really dangerous IMO. I would never leave a bird on it if I wasn't right there. It all folds up into the bottom tray. You'll see what I mean about the $$$$$ at PetsMart. Pretty pricey IMO. I won't tell you what we paid.... OK we paid $15.00 at the garage sale and it looked like it was hardly ever used. For once in my life I bit my tongue, really I did, can you believe it, hard isn't it. Didn't ask why the cage looked so unused or about the bird. I just had a bad feeling and didn't want to know.

But... You knew I couldn't stop didn't ya.:D If I hadn't found that cage so cheap I was going to build one out of wire like my flight. I would have had to put the hog rings on each time to assemble it and off to take down. That's easy and the hog rings are cheap. You can make or buy a door and pan. I have both in the home made glider cage. I think I have about $50-$60 in the glider cage plus a Sat afternoon of time. It's 36"x36"x60". That's what I was thinking of last night when I told you the size of the bird cage which was wrong.

Oh ..... Ok Jim, I have seen them at pets mart. I know what you mean about the price. You can buy a powder coated cage at the shows for about the same price. BUT they don't fold down and are way to heavy. Boy you found a real DEAL with that cage. You never know maybe someone bought it for a full time cage and then after they got it saw that is was not going to work. Thanks so much for the info.

The smaller the number on the gauge wire the thicker the wire right?

Well I will keep this in mind. Thanks again for taking the time to find it for me and the info.
