Ok, this may sound like a stupid question, and maybe it is. :funny: But for us newbies it's confusing.

Is a Conure a parrot? Or just "parrotlike". What makes a bird a parrot?

A parrot, is a bird which has a hook bill and which has 2 toes facing forward and 2 facing back. :)
Even a humble Budgie is a parrot;)
Hope this answers your question:D

Right Kristie:agree: AND they are also decended from dinossaurs (sp) Look at the shapes of some of them and then look at a diagram of a bird skeleton;)

Guess that explains why the feet are called "zygodactyl" sounds dinosaurish, lol ;)

This was asked a few years ago and this was the best answer I could come up with, scientifically:

from the Lexicon of Parrots...

http://www.arndt-verlag.com/

The green buttons on the above site list the Genus/species.

yes a conure is a parrot, so are cockatiels, Budgies, Parrotlets and lovebirds, Parrot covers a whole variety of birds not just the big guys...it's everything from the little guys on up..

Greg, Yours, like some of mine,,,A Parrot is FREE! LOL, Only kidding, those are sometimes the best ones!:agree:

If your Sun gets the word out to the other "free flyers" around you, you might have more visitors wanting to get adopted,,,

Was wondering, did you ever determine where the Sun came from ? I know you said something about the leg band being from a breeder that is no longer ,,,or something like that,,,wondering if the parrot could have been a orphan from a hurricane or the likes. At one time, i remember places like Sea World and Monkey Jungle had a number of "escapee's" from the weather,,Yours has a good home now i'm sure, just wondering it's past,,,,,

Impossible to tell Jeff, we ran into dead ends everywhere we looked. It's very possible it came from Busch Gardens. Their policy is to not accept returned birds, once they leave they don't want them back. But, I believe this guy was wild for a long while, so he theoretically could have come from anywhere in south florida.

Well, it's a good thing he showed up at your place Greg,,You would think a bird the color of a Sun Conure, being trained/tamed at one time,,would be a "target" for predators, and stick out against other birds,,,
Chicago has a colony of , i believe Quaker parrots in one of the neighborhoods,,,
Speaking of that, did anyone hear of a new movie coming out soon, if not out already? i think it's a independant film, so it's release may not be widespread,,
It's about a guy and his dealing with a colony of parrots, maybe quakers, in a city setting,,it called :The--------of Telegraph Hill (the blanks are my brain short term memory showing LOL) might even be loosely based on the Chicago parrots,,not sure, will do some searching to try to find the movie's full title,,,

Here ya go Jeff ;)

Mark Bittner - Mr. Bittner is the author of "The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill" (soon to be released as a full length film documentary). He has had the opportunity to chronicle his involvement with a flock of "wild" conures living in California. His insights into flock behaviour and individual parrot personalities are fascinating.

He supposed to be a guest speaker at a confrence through Gateway Parrot Club in St. Louis, Mo. at the end of August. Other guest speakers are Michelle Karras - Bird behavioralist and Rich Weiner - A Refuge for Saving the Wildlife, Inc. in Northbrook, Il.

This is the link to the seminar, if you live close. http://www.gatewayparrotclub.org/Fair/FairFlyer2005.rtf

Great question Greg. I have had to "argue" the point with people. They look at parakeets, Cockatiels etc and say they want a parrot. They ARE parrots. No they're not. You get the picture

That is really interesting, Its interesting that some don't think of cockatiels, parakeets, budgies etc as being a parrot. I have a friend who will not have it that they are parrots, she has a budgie and he is a budgie NOT a parrot, Ah well I've tried but that's how she thinks.

Pita, that is like someone thinking a cockatoo is a cockatoo not a parrot... LOL It's the hookbill that defines a parrot. You can look at it this way, it's kinda like an car defines a passenger car not an SUV. LOL

That is very interesting...........I had no idea a budgie was a parrot.

I can't wait to tell my neighbour who has a load of budgies in her garden aviary.
She will be surprised

Jean, you took the words out of my mouth, I have known people who don't think either Ollie or Toto are parrots. Usually they think of Grey's and Amazons as parrots.

I was talking to my friend today, and she was saying the exact same thing, that a cockatoo is not a parrot its a cockatoo. I asked her what a parrot was and she said it was the "Grey" ones and the "Red" ones like the pet shop has. I am guessing she means Greys and Macaws as they have a Macaw in there!! I find it quite sad that people still think like that. "They're not parrots, they're only..."
