We have a new bird. She is a 1-1/2 year old Senegal. Her name is Shirra. Her previous family is going to be traveling a lot this year and they wanted her to have a good home and not be alone all the time. She was only $200 with King cage, food, toys, and play stand.

She came from Jean the African Queen, in Lakeland, FL. She was from the first hatchings after the hurricanes blew away Jean's Aviary.

She has been very well taken care of. Nice, big cage with lots of perches and toys. She even came with a play stand too. Eats her veggie's very well. Matter of fact she eats EVERYTHING very well.

The young lady of the house, age 13, spent a LOT of time on the internet researching what kind of bird she should get. Once she settled on a Senegal, then she spent more time looking for a first class breeder. Very intelligent little girl. A real treat to talk to.

Shirra was being fed veggies, fruits, grains and Nutri-Seed. We have started cutting back on the seeds and including more of Mike's Manna and Zupreem Natural Pellets. She was only 110 grams when we got her, which I thought was a little small but since changing her diet, she has put on 15 grams in the past 4 weeks.

She is very well socialized. Gets along well with the two Meyers, Jardine and of course my Princess, Chloe. She isn't sure about the dog yet. She is a very good, well mannered girl. She loves my wife and she likes me too. Steps up very good. Loves attention and sitting on my shoulder. She had never had her wings clipped so we cut them enough to be safe but not to the bare bone. I think it is better to trim once a week than to trim a lot once a month or so.

I would have pictures but the junk camera I bought from QVC doesn't take very good pictures.

What happened to my pictures ??? I thought I put pictures out here.

I know I put pictures out here...

ANYWAY... She has gained more weight and her colors are just beautiful. She eats ANYTHING !!! The lady we got her from said she wouldn't eat pellets. She will stand on her perch and hold a pellet in her foot and just chow down.

I will try again tonight.

Tropiclegirl, Is that a new Avatar ??? Very Retro looking. Very nice.

Shirley is my very good friend. She knows it. But I have been known to pick on her at times. I really appreciate Shirley and how hard she works at everything she does. I wish I had her youth and energy.

She bit me twice on Saturday and I don't know why.

I was on my hands and knee's sealing the new tile grout and I heard her fly down on the floor behind me. We looked at each other and I offered her my hand and said "Step Up". She stepped up on my hand. I talked to her quietly and told her what a pretty girl she was.

I went to put her on the top of her cage, where her play things are and she drew blood between my thumb and hand. Then she stepped down on her cage.

Exact same thing when I was putting the second coat on. Now when I walk by her cage, she growls at me.

The only thing we could think of was that she didn't want back on her cage. Both times she bit me she really bit me. I didn't make a big deal out of it, other than calling 9-1-1...

Tonight, when she is with my wife, I'm going to try again. She had bit everyone in her family except the mother so maybe she bonds with women or something.

Also, I think she may be going through the terrible two's also. Our Meyer's did. Monet hasn't come out of them yet. Picasso loves everyone.

He reminds me of one of those guys that works in the Carnivals..."Heah... HEAH !!! You there. Yeah you. Come over here a minute. Here, let me step up on your hand. Nahhh... Just your hand, I promise. See ??? Now just a little ways up your arm. NO NO I won't go up on your shoulder.... Just a minute in your hair. Just one minute, no more. OHHHH You have food ??? I won't eat much. Just a couple of bites..." (Oh he looks like he has better stuff than this one does)

"Heah... HEAH !!! You there. Yeah you. Come over here a minute. Here, let me step up on your hand. What have you got there ... I won't eat much ???"

goodness Gary!! you should have been a comedian!!

are you sure your senegal is a female??

males tend to change their bond around 2 yrs of age,,,thats what we figure happened to Murphy, he was always bonded with a female, when he turned 2 he all of a sudden hated all females and now only likes males

females dont change their bond though, only males do , and itd quite common in all of the african species , or so Ive read and been told anyways

She came from Jean the African Queen, and it is alleged that she was DNA tested and she was a female. BUT, that is a very good point. When I take her to Dr. Clubb for her physical, I'll pay for the testing. I want a complete blood thing done on her anyway.

Dr. Clubb found that she had a yeast infection when we first got her. Some medicine and she was fine. I read that can come from leaving fresh food in the cage too long. She is the eater though. She eats everything.

We shall see, and thanks for the tip.
