My cousin has an AG so I knew about the breed and how wonderful they were.
When the terrorists struck NY, Sammie was a three month old, handfed baby, flying in the cargo dept. of an airliner that was headed for NYC but was forced to land in our city that day because of the threat of further action. The crew didn't know how long they would be forced to stay on the ground and didn't know how to feed a baby bird so called a local pet store and asked them if they could take the bird or it would die. They agreed.
When I'm depressed, as we all were over this great tragedy, I go to the pet store and look at the animals. I asked them if they had any AG's and they said yes and told me the story of how they came to get this bird. We were introduced to each other and it was love. I had to come to the store twice a day and learn how to feed her and then, I got to take her home!
Originally, the bird's name was Sam, short for Uncle Sam but I had her DNA'd because I wanted to watch for egg binding, etc. and found out I had a little girl so she's Sammie now.

Dianne, that's such a great story. And you've bonded so well with Sammie. I love to hear your stories about Sammie and her chatter.

Barb, I never did hear any of that information. The pet store didn't know either. I think Sammie was meant to be in our family.
She does chatter a lot. Talks up a storm. She's also very bossy. Bosses the dog, my daughter's bird and my daughter. I've been teaching her to speak a little French. I only know a little myself! So now, she says good morning and bonjour.
The funniest thing she imitates is the dial tone from my speaker phone! Half of the time, I don't answer my cell phone because I think it's Sammie and not the phone.
Like others here, she does the one sided phone conversation. The phone rings and she begins with her own dialogue. Just too funny.

What an amazing story! I thought of so many things that day, all the possibilities... all the animals en route... fish and corals en route... but hadn't thought of the baby birds dependent on feedings en route... how sad! and how lucky Sammie is! I would guess she was from a breeder to a bird store or another "breeder"? not a family at that age...
I'm so glad you have her now!
I enjoyed reading your lovely story about Sammi. I believe it was fait that brought the two of you together. :tighthug: I look forward to reading much more about your little Sammy.
Thank you, for sharing your toughing story. Pics please!!!

My sister lives in Paris so I try to visit her at least once a year. Tough job, I know. Anyway, we went to a bird show in Paris and there were these baby AG's just waiting for someone to buy them. I got to thinking about them and how they would speak French instead of English. Kind of a sweet thought.
So, I try to throw a little French into the mix when I'm working with Sammie and her vocabulary. We have a "nightly love session" for an hour every night and that is when we cuddle and I teach her new words.
However, she has picked up a phrase of mine that I didn't realize she was listening to..."Oh Sh**" She uses the right tone of voice too and of course, it's in my voice so I can't blame my husband.:funny:
I can be having a rotten day but when that crazy bird looks at me and tells me she loves me, well, what can I say? My heart melts.
I understand what you mean about teaching them new words and sayings. I am glad to hear you spend special one on one time with your baby.
Our U2 has a better then average vocabulary just because we have always treated him as out child. He is with us all day and vacations with us too. He just started saying two new phrases yesterday and the day before.
two days ago it was are you hungry? yesterday it was I'd like that!
He used them both knowing what they meant as usual. He said are you hungry when I asked him if he wanted to eat and after I told him what his dinner was he replied I'd like that.
He uses most those words in other pfrases. the new words in these are and I'd they are so much fun to talk with.

What I find amazing is how they know our names. And, Sammie has her own name for my daughter, one that nobody in this house has ever called her. She calls her "Brandi Girl." Of course, it melts Brandi's heart.
We had a housekeeper named Ros and Sammie would always say, "Hi Ros" when she walked in the door. When we moved away, Sammie never said it again.
She has now learned the theme song from The Andy Griffith Show. Just whistles away. Also sings the song from the Yahoo commercial.
What did we ever do without these birds?

Someone mention Greys knowing our names roflol, let me tell you what Akeela calls us:
Daddy is : "hey baby" (in a cute sexy voice) I swear she's trying to replace me, roflol!!
Me: "MOM!" "Hey Barb" this is used more often, but is so cute for her to call me, exactly when she wants me.
My girls: "Tina" "Allison"
My dog: "whistle, Shotzy"
hehehe they are sooooo fun!!! And they DO know our names to whom they are talking to ;)
cool beans :emot-danc

I've heard Shadow say both our names, but usually, I'm called "Rick!" when Shadow's angry at me (the name of his old daddy). Dionysus calls me "Momma" and "Mommy" and hubby is called by name, as is Serephina (kitty). She usually adresses Jack with her imitation of his squawk and Brat (kitty) is addressed in kitten (which Brat speaks fluently), lol. I'm the only one Jack has a name for, which is "Mama". I'm the only one he takes the time to try to speak to. Dionysus uses sounds to identify other people (my sister is often called "mommy" as well, since her children are the ones who taught Dionysus that word in the first place; and one of my friends that Dionysus likes best is called by a specific series of clicks). Dionysus once called hubby "daddy" right after we got married, but then returned to his name afterwards.
~Xak
Elvie famous calls to us.
I'm "mama" - "mommy" - "I want my mama" - "I want mama"
Al is "daddy" - "my daddy"

Sammie always used my husband's voice when speaking except for a few phrases. I thought maybe it was just easier for her until I read they will speak in what they consider to be their rival's voice to compete. Amazing.
Yes, we are their mentor in speach as well as most everything they learn as our companion.
I will post picture of Sammie for Dianne.

What amazes me is how in tune to our vocabulary they really are from both speach and comprehension of our vocabulary.
Here is Dianne's Sammie. Sorry it took me so long to post it.
NOTE: You can see a bigger picture if you click on the picture.
Dianne, he's beautiful!!! I am so glad she fills your life with such joy!

She looks quite cocky in that picture, doesn't she? Could be because she IS cocky!

No response so I leaned over the stair railing and said "David?" I heard, "Huh?" I said, "Did you call me?" and I heard, "Yeah" and finally went downstairs to see what he wanted and it was my crazy bird messing with my mind.

We were having problems with our cable tv so a repair man came out and when he walked out of the house to go back to his truck to get something, Sammie said, "See ya later, babe." The guy stopped in the middle of the hall and looked around. I had to tell him it was the bird, not me calling him babe!:rotflmao:
I love it!! :rotflmao: The things that come out of the mouth of birds can give a lot of laughs! :rotflmao:
Sammie sound just adorable ..have you posted a picture somewhere of her ..
How amazing that you got to take her into your life ..I wonder whatever happened to her owner waiting at the other end...Fate , guess it was meant to be....

Bill posted a picture of her somewhere earlier in this thread.
I never did find out if Sammie was headed for a pet store in NYC or what. I just happened along, paid good money, took her home and you're right, fate stepped in on this one. She was meant to be with me! We're in  .
Do your AG's start talking the minute you get on the phone? Sammie takes it as a clue to start her own conversation. I have to eventually explain I have a chatty bird that competes with me. She likes to mimic my laugh too while I'm on the phone. I laugh, she laughs!:rotflmao:
I have an Italian Greyhound and she was acting silly, digging on the sofa pillows trying to make a nest to sleep and Sammie just stared at her like she was nuts. Sammie finally said, "Diz! What ARE you doing?" Very bossy bird.
