This is Nugget, our male Paradise Whydah. He is from Africa, and wild-caught, so age unknown. They are all wild-caught, and I've not heard of them being bred in captivity. He sings beautifully like a songbird, and loses his long tail and beautiful colors about 3 times a year and looks much like an English sparrow, the female Whydah. Then he gets his "male" plumage back and sings up a storm again! We named him Nugget for the gold feathers on the nape of his neck. We actually have two Whydahs now, and can only tell them apart by the color of their toenails. We've had Nugget for about 3 or 4 yrs.
Paradise Whydahs lay their eggs in other birds' nests and don't bother to raise young. :foot-tap: The bird peeking out of the coconut is a Spanish Timbrado canary. I sold all my canaries to a friend who raises canaries in large flights.

This is the SAME BIRD - Nugget after he molts and looks like a female for about three months at a time.

And from the front. I used to have Gouldians, but my friend with the Canaries has all my Gouldian finches now.

Hi Shirley
I have a question on how you made the coconut nest I have thought about doing one for mine but I am not sure how to get the coconut out or do I and do I allow it also to dry out I am pretty sure how to drill a hole but any advice from you would be so helpful..mine is for a canary and the hole may need to be larger or just using half the coconut what can i do to prepare it for the canary? any help is appreciated sorry for so many questions I just don't want to start this and it fly's across the yard and hits the neighbors windshield. thanks so much
