View Full Version : On the cabinets (movie)
Here they are playing on the cabinets. Nino is allowed to hang like that and play, he doesn't destroy them. Teo, because of my lack of training and or not finding the right combination of things, is not allowed to hang.
You will see at the end they don't want the camera that close and growl. I shouldn't have push this issue as I did but I want to show the signs they give. You can see the head and neck feathers start to fluff the longer the camera stays.
It's 7.50 MB

Jim, I love how Nino comes to you, lands then says "HI" how adorable!!!
So that was their growl?? It's kinda erie, sounds like that noise from the movie "The Grudge" lol
Nino was beak rubbing, but I saw him get a taste of that cabinet :p
Thanks, They both do that. Almost everyone that sees them the first time says the same thing. Awwww... they say Hi when they land.
Taste??? Hmmmm.... he was trying to open the door he was on, silly bird, then tried to open the other door. He's pretty good, he doesn't chip the wood, and he sure could, he will try to open the doors but not use too much pressure. Teo, that's another story. He's bad!!! (I love him tho) He will try to open a door, chew it, anything he wants to do while hanging.
Jim, that is a good interaction video... It is great you are sharing these videos. It gives us an open window into a large flighted parrot in it's home. So different from watching the smaller ones. They are so different from what I would picture Elvie if he were flighted in home. He'd have the cupboards chewed up along with all the furniture. Not to mention the home decor like that pitcher, he'd want to see how much fun it would be to throw it down and watch it bounce...
Thank you so much.

Jim as always they are beautiful. The video is great, I'll have to come back to it when I have sound. I'm missing so much:doh: I love the way Nino will open the door and Teo looks on, you can just see him thinking, give me a minute with those cabinets!! hehehehe
Thanks Jean and Peta.
Jean, That's exactly why I put this one here. It's not too interesting. Guess the first 5 seconds when they fly might be. I wanted to show how they do in the house. We had our times with those buckets/pitchers believe me. Still do some days. Here's their newest thing, and I was a little surprised that Nino started it. The pitchers are all sitting on either square pieces of that craft styrofoam or 6-8 magazines too get then up above the cabinet lip. Well they both seem to get a kick out of pulling the styrofoam or mags out from under them. Pitcher falls over - Teo flies off, but before Nino does, if he's the offender, he throws the mag or styrofoam.
Peta your right about Teo. He isn't really all that bad he just loves to chew certain things and the cabinets, when hanging, are one of them. I can't figure out why he's OK on top, not perfect but liveable, but if he hangs on like Nino is, he would go to town if I'm not right there. What's up with that??? Really... serious question anyone. Any idea why that would be? I've tried working with him but it's like he's obsessed with chewing when he hangs.:shrug2:

That's terrific! I loved it! (I need to make shorter movies!)
I've no clue why one chews and one doesn't...
I love hearing their sounds!
Jim, I can't help but think Teo's chewing desires are only natural desires of parrots. Did you ever think that maybe Nino is more different by not having the same need to chew. Some species are more prone to chew everything like cockatoos. Don't you think parrots with a huge hookbill have natural instincts to prepare and crush their food for survival, they use the powerful beaks to break and tear nesting materials, fight off predators, interaction, play, and preening . Some cockatoos chew and burrow nests high in tree trunks.
Thinking of the macaws and other parrots in Peru that have a natural desire/need to return to chew on the mineral lick mountain wall often called the macaw lick.
It's no easy answer, think about this, larger parrots can't be kept in wooden frame aviary's because they chew the frame away just like they would a house.
Yep I totally agree Jean. And right again, GW's on average do chew more and harder than a B&G. You're probably right it's something inate that they do.
Thanks, I'm thinking it may take more than I capable of doing but I have to try. Inate behaviors can be changed, hard to do, but I believe it is possible. Wish me luck, I think I'll need it for this one.

I agree, behaviors can be changed once a human can find a positive way to divert the parrots need to do something more rewarding. If his need for chewing furnishings/cupboards can be successfully stopped I have faith in you doing it. Then, would you mind taking on a big fluffy white cockatoo that has the desire and need to chew and keep chewing?
Jim, fantastic movie, thanks for sharing:)
If I let Toto do that, I would have no kitchen left:rofl:
Here's what happened when he was peping round the door while Dave was making dinner, he took his eye off him only for seconds:funny:
Althouhg he has a liking for door frames thankfully he never chews furniture:foot-tap:

Sue, Opps, :rotflmao: you can just see it in his face in that second picture (easy to see in hindsight)
Jean I love that picture, I have seen it before but I love it more each time I see it.
Awww... Poor Toto, Mom and Dad just don't understand. A little Cockatoo graffiti adds character in any home.:agree: :funny:
I like those photos Sue -- Good to see you back.:highfive:

Sue, I remember those pics, there were too cute!! It was sooo funny, when Toto was peeking around, reminded me of Sinbad peeking through the door crack :rotflmao:
oh and my sweet little innocent Akeela has made nice little dents on our door frame, guess I'll have to spackle and touch up b4 we move
Hey, the way I see it, the door frames are easy to replace, furniture is not ;)
I love those pics...Glad you shared them again.

That is for sure. If I left Elvie alone one minute on our furniture it would be ruined...

I could watch your boys all day, they are fascinating! The growl is amazing. I'd like to see you do a whole documentary on living with your free flighted large parrots and put it out on DVD, like March of the Penguins goes suburban!
