I bought Bailey a bunch of new toys from Drs. Foster & Smith and they were delivered on Saturday. I cleaned out his cage yesterday and took all his old toys down and redecorated his cage with all new ones. He's not much interested in them. But, that's they way he was with his last batch of toys. I got him these because I thought he might be bored with his old ones.

He's never really been much of a toy player. He likes the shredder strips I got, which I weave in between the bars of his cage. And that's pretty much it. He'll absently pick or pull at a toy but never really just "Gets" into it.

His favorite activity is to sit in his food dish and fling his food out. Silly bird.

Forte, my sun conure, doesn't seem to really get into toys much, either. Have tried many different types, but she just ignores most of them. She's had one or 2 wooden toys that she's played with. She does like to play with toys outside her cage, however. I made a "jungle gym" by putting a tension rod in a doorway and hanging swings and toys from it. She likes that a lot - but the toys she enjoys OUTSIDE she ignores inside.

Bucc will play with anything, dogs toys, cats toys, kids toys, he really not fussy, but Errol and Flynn only use their toys to hide behind, they never play with them. I got them some shredders and they are only now starting to shred it, but its only a little, Well maybe one day!!!

Ollie (tiel) isn't a toy boy either but I put in the hanging ones as small as possible. At the moment his favourite hobby is untying the knots holding the bits together.

I think it's a good idea to rotate toys every week or so. I also think it's good to leave one or two he's most attatched to alone. Not giving all new and strange only .. I think it's kinda hard for some birds to give up all their old playmates at once..

Got one of those for Bucc and he loves and hates it. Its driving him crazy that he can't get to the clanger to rip it out. LOL

Bailey has a little pacifier toy that he's had since he adopted us, and I don't take that out of his cage. And, I don't mess with his snuggle hut. He doesn't sleep in it, He snuggles up to the outside of it.

I was watching him today and he started nibbling on one of his toys, so maybe he's figuring they're okay since they've been in his cage for awhile.

Vicki, some birds are frightened or leery of new toys until they get to know them. Others will take to them right away.. It's good to know Baily is getting acquainted with his... He is a lucky boy to of chosen such a good home.

Glad that Bailey is taking to his toys, I just love the part about him snuggling up to the outside of his snuggle hut. Just tooooooooooooooo cute.

Mine will only play with certain toys and that takes a long while for trhem to start. They loved bright coloured ones-especially with food in!!!

Nino and Teo don't mind new toys but our tiel Angel was like Bailey. If you left his favorite and added a new one it was Okay, kinda'. Took him a while to play with it but he would except it after he figured out it wasn't going to get him. Silly Millie he was -- but he was the cutiest little guy. :) I still think about him and miss him.

I sympathse with you. I still miss our nanday conure "Bart". She was such a sweet little girl. I often think of her and how much love we shared. The bigger birds are great but, there is something so very special about having a smaller bird. Each one offers their own love and companionship no matter how large or how small they are. :highfive:

I agree with you Jean. I wouldn't give up the caws for the world, but boy did I get attached have fun with Angel. That little guy was hardly any trouble and would just sit on my shoulder or get down on the desk and be pretty good. He couldn't do much damage like the big guys so it was more relaxing. He loved to be with me and kiss and all that stuff just like the big guys.

I have only seem him once since he went to his new home with his buddy. I swear that little guy remembered me like it was yesterday. Made it kinda' tough to leave and I wonder what it does to them. I know he's really happy there, he bonded to the female we were watching for 4 1/2 months and I just had to let him go with her. Oh well enough mushy stuff, he's fine and all is good.:D

Vicki, pretty much ditto on what Jean mentioned,,,change some old with new toys, and you might find Bailey could get in the frame of mind to enjoy the "newness" of toys introduced. I would tho, leave a few of his favs in the cage tho, ie: pacifier and snuggle/sleeping thing, as not to totally throw him in a tizzy with all new stuff in the cage.
My fids here follow no rules, some like toys(old and new) some could care less for the longest time, then one day tear into one like the dickens.
I did the adding machine paper roll thing, after i saw/read about Shirley doing it for hers fids. Sinbad- SC2, would pull all the paper off and line the bottom of the cage in paper,,and then play in it:doh: , Gumby- BFA, could care less for it, but chews up wood like its going outa style LOL. Coral , the Bourke i got from Shirley, got a hold on a piece of adding amchine paper left on top of his cage, pulled it in and beak/paper punched the coolest designs in it.Almost looked like lacework LOL(i kept/saved a piece of it, planning to frame it , as a work of bird art LOL.)
I think if you can get Bailey into the mindset of exploring new toys as they get introduced, and getting into playing /destroying them ,that would be a good practice to obtain.

Hello

Well Max loves his toys, especially the noisy ones!!:rotflmao:
He's not keen on anything with a mirror ( he hisses and runs the other way!)
I have found that as long as the toys are small( ish) then he is quite happy!
The acrylic ones he also loves! and kitchen roll tubes!
I have tried introducing him to a swing, he's not too sure yet!!, so i will keep trying!
I would love to know if anybody else has any ideas on toys for a cockatiel ( to make his life more interesting!)!
Thank you again for the warm welcome!
Jo and Max:thanx:

Harley gets mad at his toys ;) He screams at them sometimes, while he's ripping and chewing and hanging from them.

He loves kraft paper and shreds it with glee- just like a kid, buy him expensive toys, he'd still rather play with the box :)

I rarely have "leftover" toys - he destroys them all! :D
