View Full Version : The boys outdoors - Pics
We went outside today but it was pretty windy. They would fly to me and play in the wind but when I held the camera it was not going to happen - not flying in the wind with that camera near their landing spot.

You can see the wind blowing Nino's feathers, he's on the mail box.

Not good photos but once inside they were ready to fly around and play.

Oh Wow! As soon as I posted, the flight photos appeared! How fun!! I love them!!! :emot-danc
Thanks Shirley, I still need to figure out the 'sport' setting on the camera. I read the book again but.... from what I read I need 3 more fingers - all working at once to do it right.:yikes:
I'll get with you one of these days in the photo forum. I know, I know, I've told you that before.  :)

Hi Jim the are lovely pictures and your birds are beautiful. I notice you have them harnessed...........is it easy to do, does it stress the bird and can they still fly with it on. I would be interested in how you go about it
Hi Sue, Yes they can fly outdoors with the harness on. Thinking of the bird first and foremost here. If a person chooses to fly the bird outdoors with the harness the owner needs to be very aware of many things. Just a few, the bird can take off fast, come to the end of the lead and be jerked rather hard that "could" cause injury. Lead can get tangled in a tree and the bird can not fly down. As you can see there are many things to watch for.
I think it is well worth the effort it takes to teach the bird to wear the harness. I take my birds out all the time, weather permitting. I'm sure my birds enjoy it, and I certainly enjoy taking them with me. It's a win win situation and it sure doesn't hurt the relationship either.:)
It's best to go slow and let the bird set the pace when getting them used to the harness. Like any behavior we want, in the words of Bob Bailey (animal trainer) "You don't get what you want -- you get what you reward".
IMO the best harness on the market at the moment is the "Aviator Harness" at The Parrot University (http://theparrotuniversity.com/harness/harness.html). I helped with this harness so I feel comfortable recommending it. What you see on my birds is a mix of things I have come up with that work for my birds.
Here's a pic of one of my birds flying off the deck to me. If I remember right I'm about 20-30 feet out in the yard.

Jim they are great photo's and I just love the colouring of the boys they are so bright. Brilliant. Bucc will not, under any circumstances, wear a harness. I managed to get one on him after a while but he then sat there and bit it to pieces. Oh well:doh:
