Hello.............not sure if this is the right board to post this on..........still finding my way around here.
We hope to collect Harry our baby African Grey in a week or two, and have bought him a Heidelburg cage sized 32x23x45. I am now getting a bit worried that this cage won't be big enough for him when he is fully grown. His birthday was 17th July so he will be either 13 or 14 weeks old depending on when we can collect him. Also at what age will he be fully grown? I would love to post a picture of him but again I am not sure where to put it.
Any help or information would be of help
Thank you
Take care
Sue

32x23x38 are the inside dimensions of Holly's powder coated cage, and it's plenty cage for her. She used to be in a larger cage, but didn't use all of it at all.

When she was a baby, we kept her in a cockatiel cage at night and in a large cage or out on a tree stand or play stand when we were supervising her. Greys are rather heavy and clumsy when they are young. She stayed in her big cage all the time when she was 5-1/2 mos old.

She sleeps in a covered "sleeping cage" in a quiet room with Skyler, our Rose-breasted cockatoo, so they get 11-12 hrs uninterrupted dark sleep (with a small nightlight).

Sue, I agree with Shirley about the cage size being large enough. :agree: Just be sure to give Harry plenty of hanging toys, both chew and preening. They often love a few foot toys along with some food fledging toys to hide treats in so they can exercise their natural fledging abilities. He will most likely enjoy playing outside of the cage as much as possible, so it's always a good idea to have more toys for his playtop, if his cage has one, tree stand, or what ever out of cage play area he will have.

I am anxious to see Harry's pics.:emot-danc Babies are always so adorable, I can remember 11 yrs ago when I brought home my baby Elvie.:)

As Holly became older, her favorite cage item is her "wire hanging shelf". She lies on her back, 3/2 up toward the top of her cage, and plays with the toys that hang over that shelf... much like a baby would play with a "mobile" in a crib. She grabs them with her beak and feet and flaps her wings, all while on her back!

Shirley, those are nice. Barb has one of those in stainless steel shelves in Sindbad's cage. I believe, he even has a wall shield attached in the corner behind it to provide a more private and secure area for sleeping. Maybe Barb will offer more in detail and show a pic of hers.

Here is a pic of one. It may not be just like the one you have.

My military macaw is in a California cage thats cage thats w36" X d24"X- h64.5" and 1 inch bar spacing and she has plenty of room...so the size you say the cage for your grey is sounds good

This is Holly's shelf - kinda hard to get her to stay on it for a picture when I'm there...

In the pic above you can see the black horizontal bars. There are to bars going up the side of her cage that hook to hold it in place.

Shirley, that is a nice shelf. It looks roomier then the 1/4 circular ones I linked.
Thanks! for the pics.

PS: Holly is beautiful!

Thanks, Jean. It comes in small and large. She has the small one, and Skyler (RB2) has the large one. I got them at the Chicago bird show, and don't know who makes them.

This is his hidey I call it ;) It's perfect for him since the fear issues and all, he feels very secure there. He loves his sleep nook.

Dr. Fosters & Smith carries the shelf (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=12438&N=2003+113336), but I have looked everywhere for the back guard and haven't been able to find one.

Sinbads was actually part of his old cage, Neon brand, I think.

Both cages for my greys are 30x24x64 total height, as you can see by the pic, there is PLENTY of room for them & with lots of toys! Akeela's is on the left & Sinbad's is on the right (even though Akeela is hanging out on his cage-he's on my computer chair, lol)

Thanks Barb! It does give Sinbad the security he needs. Do you know what material the enclosure is made of ?

Jean, it's powder coat, just like his old cage.

I like the edge on this one, rather that the one you posted, his is square on its end not a thin edge that seems uncomfortable on their feet, if they were to be turned around facing the other way, like he does at night when he's really sleeping good.

So, it's metal like the cage? Right!

Barb, are we talking about the same thing? I am wondering what the back splash enclosure material is made of.
