See the Angel in this one - in front of the rocks on the left, and the little cichlyid to the bottom left of the bottom silver dollar.
Very pretty! I did not know you had one.
:thanx: so much for sharing it.

I have been advised before that although I don't have many fish, because they are so large I don't have space for anymore, but I do need a plec or sucking loach.
I don't have a water testing kit and need to get one!
I find it hard to find the time to clean the tank as often as I should.. fish are not so easy to rehome either and often die in transit. I think I fed them too often before - a generous pinch daily. I try to feed them every other day now.

Hi Kristie,
Once you get your tank stabilized, you won't have to fool with it so much. I'd just keep up those water changes until you get rid of all the ammonia and nitrtites and not worry quite so much about the nitrates. You're right, you have plenty fish, and the pleco and loach will eat algae, but wait 'til you get the tank stabilized for a few weeks first. Run your lights like Gary said to help eliminate algae in the meantime.
Once all is well and chemistry is correct, water changes once a month or once every 6 weeks should be good enough... about a 10 gallon change and lightly vacuum the gravel, don't stir it all up.
You have a beautiful tank! :)

I once had a twenty, long tank like that. I used an undergravel filter. I had artificial plants and rocks with light blue and black gravel. It took about two or three months for the tank to stabalize, but I never changed the water. Every six months or so, I would take everything out except the water. I ran a Diatom filter on the water to polish it and put stuff back for another six months.
That was back in the early '80's and it worked great. Lots of air in the undergravel filter and the fish were fine. I fed on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I had two Angels, a silver dollar, a clown loach, 6 red rasbora, 3 rummy nose and a percosomus (Alge eater). The angels were a pair and actually would lay eggs on the rock. I tried moving the eggs to a smaller tank but I always got stunted, dumb looking baby angels. I read somewhere that the more black in an Angel, the harder they are to keep. I had two black, veil tails and never had any problem.
You tank and fish look good. I was expecting much much worse. Your description made me think you had a real sewer going there. But the pictures look good.

Well, thank you.
I orginally had in addition...
2 pearl gourami's 2 blue gourami's 2 glass cat fish 2 plecostomus sucking loach congo frog, pair of angels (someone else gave me the current one) who laid eggs, and probably others too!!!! -yes I had various tetra, non lasted very long. Obviously they were all much much smaller but I probably still overloaded the tank in the beginning so that was the cause of the problem. I didn't have all those fish at the same time though, but I have 7 in the tank I started with about 15 or so!
I've lost about 5 plec's in all and haven't got any more incase i lose them too..

Kristie, part of the cause of you losing the pleco's might be a few things, one being they need a lot of algae/vegetable matter in their diet, just having one in a tank as a scavenger will not allow one to last long in any tank unless the tank has loads of that for them to eat.Blanched greens, ie: Romaine lettuce, lightly squashed peas have been used,Chinese cabbage etc. The run on the mill "iceberg" type lettuce has next to none nutritional value to it.Nori, the seaweed sheets used to wrap sushi(yup,LOL) is good to try also, just make sure the nori you get i only the roasted type, no seasonings added to it,,,Fish shops might carry this, and if they do they most times charge a boatload for it,,,best thing to do , is find a Oriental market that carries it,,,Waaaay cheaper! the same stuff i get ,,,like 50 sheets is $4-5 at the Oriental shops,,,while that much at a fish shop goes for more than $20:shrug2: ,,,same thing,,,depends who's selling it.
Also, if you determine you have a ammonia problem, ammonia tends to be in higher concentration towards the lower end on the tank,,,and any scavenger , or fish that spends it's time on/near the bottom , would /could be affected by the higher concentration of ammonia,,and affect the fish that spent their time at the top, or can move around the tank,,to be affected to lesser degrees,,,
This info is offered only if you decide to try a pleco or bottom dweller/scavenger in the future,,,,:wavey:

hmmm thanks Jeff! I will keep that in mind.
I do have pellets for catfish too. I know i need to get some plants I always had plants but now the silver dollars are as big as biscuits (eer, Cookies!!) they eat em all really quickly.
