I take some of ours in when we first bring them home, the large birds like Skyler and Holly. I don't take the smaller birds in, and no one goes for regular annual checkups. Skyler goes frequently b/c he's having his problems. Anyone who so much as hiccups or glances sideways goes in. You have to understand... I don't always know how many birds we have! :rotflmao: But... other than Skyler's skin/feather situation, none have been sick.:agree:

I only take them in when it's an emergency. I do keep close tabs on them health wise, I just have a problem taking them where there are possible diseases. Just me. I did take them in regularly when they were under a year old (every 3 months). It was always the first visit.

The closest avian vet to me is 85 miles south, but it is worth it. We take them in when they first come home and then at least once a year after that. Chloe, I take every 6 months.... Can't have anything happen to my girl.

I go to my doctor, only if I'm dying. I don't take my wife at all.... I did take her to get life insurance ...

I don't go to the doc til nothing else works. My kids didn't go til they all but asked to go. I think they went maybe 4 times ea. by the time they entered high school! They never went for routine anything, not even shots. I got around that as much as possible. (they were born at home, you know)

My chiropractor's been doing wonders, though! I don't feel like I'm 85 anymore!

I think w/Greys expecially it helps to do yearly, to check on calcium levels and at least do a fecal to make sure nothing is hidden.

Better safe than sorry w/my babies!!

As for me going to the doc, lol, I don't go unless I'm pratically dying, but that will change now w/family benefits, whoo hooo

You have a point there with the calcium levels!

yes, but I really think w/the amount of naural light Holly must get she should be ok, but during those winter months can deplete because it's obviously cooler and we don't get them out as much.

I don't go to the doc til nothing else works....

In the past year... I've learned a lot ... and our birds, cats, and dog have all had some necessary treatment that I would not have noticed they needed, but Dr. Cook did notice... and now my attitude is different from when I first posted on this.

I NEVER go to the doctors (for me anyway) things have to be really bad before I venture anywhere near them. (everytime I've been to the doctors, I've ended up in hospital)

My birds and fids, well thats a different matter, :agree: Jess the old gal goes to the vets every 6 months, more if needed. Rex goes once a year, the cat she's only ever been once and thats cos she's real vicious as soon as she sees the carrier and takes off. My vet will call in here to see the little guys as Errol and Flynn get really stressed out, Bucc goes every year :agree: loves going to the vets he gets spoilt rotten.

Barb, you made a good point about the importance of calcium.

Here is a good link about it's importance.

I don't take mine in unless I think there is something wrong that I can't deal with at home myself...they always say if you want to get sick just go the the doctors or the hospital and with avian vets you can't gurantee how well they have cleaned up the room after the last birds was in there or washed their hands, have they changed their smock, used a clean towel and you can't gurantee the last bird didn't have something contagious,

I found a new "bird" vet about 8 miles south of me. I called to make an appointment to have Chloe's beak and nails trimmed. I told the lady, that answered the phone, that she was an eight year old, female, Umbrella Cockatoo.

She ask me what color ??? ...

I told her I would check and call back... And I hung up.

West Palm isn't all THAT far, I guess....

I take my birds in annually. I do take my parrotlet in more often for checkups because of his ongoing medical problem we are working on . I keep a close eye on them. Anything out of the ordinary we go in. My avian vet in about 15 min away.
