Uncovering the birds before work, and when I got to Chewie and Wasabi's cage, I could see that there was blood dotted here and there, and a spot on the cage grill at the bottom! I almost fainted! They were both sitting there, but the right side of Chewie's head was bloody! I was screaming for Ken to come, as you might imagine.

I just couldn't figure out what might have happened, by just looking at him! and he had a bloody foot, too. I got him toweled and took him into the bathroom- mostly the blood was just dried around his eye, and it made his feathers there look so dark. I cleaned the area with a Q-tip, and of course it made the place look EVEN worse, but there as tiny dot of a puncture, like a bird beak . . . I put some of the stop-bleeding goop on it- thanks, Dave! I owe you a bottle; had forgotten!- even though it wasn't actively bleeding, looked at his foot- it was not hurt, just bloody from where he must have rubbed his head, and then put him back in the cage.

He seems fine, but I guess Wasabi must have pecked him! We could find nothing he had hurt himself on . . . just THE strangest thing! I have never had anything happen like this before, so you can imagine! We were late to work- couldn't help it! I would have stayed home, to be honest . . . ! I am worrying, but he wasn't bleeding. MAN! What a morning!

Hugs!

Kim

Kim, how shocking and frightening to find your birds like this!

How old are Chewie and Wasabi? Are they a bonded pair (mutual preening, sleeping side-by-side)? youngsters? adults? (I haven't gone back to read your previous posts to refresh my memory)

Chewie is about 14 yrs. old, and Wasabi is about 2 1/2- they love each other dearly, bicker like an old married couple, and preen each other, cuddle . . . but sometimes Wasabi DOES whack Chewie- had never seen her do it so he bled, and maybe it was a lucky shot . . . ! I checked the cage over for anything he might have hurt himself on- not a thing in there out of the ordinary! Just the little splattered blood droplets from where he must've shaken his head!! We have had Wasabi for about a year. It was love at first sight for them both, though at first we kept them in separate cages.

Thanks, Shirley! I'm catching my breath now!

Hugs!

Goodness Gracious Kim, that was a terrible scare. I am glad it stopped bleeding on it's own. Thankfully, it was not worse. :tighthug:

Thinking back, on the cage, you don't suppose Chewie could of whammed her head into the end of those curly scroll work near the top of their cage do you? I do not want to scare you, :tighthug: For their safety I feel I should mention this. I knew a lady in California several years ago that had a cage like theirs. Her bird got it's head stuck in one of those curved swirls, he thrashed around trying to get loose and cut himself on the end of one of those scrolls fighting to get loose and couldn't. :(

Sending :grouphug: to all of you.

Well, it's sounding like a freak accident. Not necessarily intentional or something that will be repeated.

Thank you ALL for your kind words and concern! I checked the cage over- toys and side bars- the works. No blood anywhere but from free standing- no blood on anything but droplets/tiny spatters! I was thinking that, too, or some of the wooden toys, perhaps . . . Nothing!

I really thing she must've nailed him, but I guess from now on he WILL behave, huh?! Chewie is my old quaker who thinks he's a doberman! Ken has always called him the cobra in feathers! *grin* I just can't imagine!!

I am really anxious to get home and see about him, though . ..

Hugs!

hahahaha! Glad I made you laugh, Jean! Chewie is SO mean sometimes!! He is just cage-protective! But he'll bite you in a heartbeat!!

It has never happened before, and maybe Wasabi was just a little over-zealous preening him and pulled a feather . . . ! No idea! It really is a mystery! It wasn't like he was scared of her or anything- he is twice her size! Hmmmm.

Maybe she WAS just a little testy and told him to STOP whatever or shut up! *grin*

Will give you guys a report tomorrow from what I find when I get home today!

Hugs!

Hi Kim

That must have been scary.

Our boys have never drawn blood but what happens, I've seen this, is they get to playing pretty rough at times. They seen to be so interested in the rough play they forget they are next to a toy, cage side, corner, and can't pull away from the other and they will end up with a scratch on their face. Never been a problem and the other quickly backs off when he hears the little scream.

Maybe that kind of thing happened.

I sure hope it's something similar so you don't have to worry.

One of my canaries did something similar, it turned out to be that one of his toenails was jagged though.

The Tesserract broke a blood feather a few days after i brought her home and she sprinkled blood everywhere. I had to take her out, towel her and pull the shaft... which is probably one of the main reasons she seriously distrusts me, even though the 'operation' went smoothly and was over in less than a couple minutes....

Birds can bleed so fast it looks like a murder scene.... :(

Wow! It IS pretty scary! Chewie seemed okay when we got home. I tried to clean him up some more- the blood that got on the feathers on that side of the head makes him look like he has a giant bruise! Awful! I tried, but still didn't get him ALL cleaned up! As you can imgagine, even toweled he was a hand full! Fought me most of the way to do what I needed to do!

I will keep a watch on them. If Wasabi is really pecking him, we are going to separate them. I have already been considering what cage to put her in, from our spares!

Hugs!

Kim I am glad nothing else has happened. I hope it was just a accident. You take care and they are like kids you have to keep an eye on them all the time. :agree: Maybe they were just playing a little too rough. I hope so anyway.
