I started out with an oledr pair of tiels of unknown origin and they decided to breed. But i cannot figure out their gene banks here. Not that i'm any good at this genetics thing. i have read screens and screens of online tiel genetics articles, but i can't put it together in my head.

Maybe i can get some help here? :)

My female, Athena is a whiteface. I am guessing pied as well, because she has one blotch of white behind her crest in an odd shape. Her color is a medium gray. The male, Pollen is a real mystery. He is a pale gray color with a yellow brown wash, (which is why i named him Pollen, cause it looks like he was painted with yellow pine pollen) his feet are grayish pink and beak is pink, his eyes are a lighter brown than Athena's. His head yellow goes down to his shoulders and is somewhat pastel.

They have had three clutches together, all resulting in only one chick each.

The first baby is Happy, and she is a light gray, with a pale yellow head that fades out to her shoulders. She does not have the yellowish "wash" that her dad has. On her left shoulder she has this patch of pearling which hasn't molted out. Her feet are pink and her beak is too.

Next baby is Brody, and he is very pied. his beak is pink and one foot has dark nails and the other foot, they are all white.

Third is Biskit Bird, i am suspecting this bird to be female possibly. Medium gray with a yellowish cast to the white on the wing edges, lemony colored head which fades to the shoulders and some mottling of gray above the beak. Small solid yellow feathers at the base of the tail... pink feet and beak. Eyes are a dark gray slate color and pick up red quite easily, slight bald patch under the crest.

any ideas?

i am having a hard time distinguishing the differences in sliver, fallow, cinnamon, and olive. going by online pictures isn't making it easy since many of those different shades of color are taken by different people, different cameras and different light levels.....

help :help:

This site might be helpful, some of the links on the left of the main page:

Whiteface and pearl are both sex-linked traits, from what I understand, and will show in females more often than males. Pied is not. Tielie whopper genetics are really ... weird.

Yeah, they are. Seems even the best online descriptions and photos aren't helping me figure this out with confidence.
I wish there was a local Tiel pro around here that could visually describe my birds' assorted mutation/color mix.

There are just enough variables in the offspring of my two foundation birds to make a rubber band ball of my brain...:p

Do you have excellent photos? The friend I mention over on the weight thread you started could likely help you. I could email her your photos. She is VERY knowledgeable about 'tiels. She's an acqaintance, actaully, as I met her in town recently.

Lutinos have an inherent gene for baldness (the bald area behind the crest).

That is just not true!! I do not have a bald spot. True, it's a little thin under the crest, but I am NOT bald!

(Take it easy, Freebie... I'm sure the article didn't mean it personally.)

i think i had read that Lutinos are more prone to the bald spot, but not all have it bad....

my Biskit Bird has a bit of a bald spot and she's not a lutino as far as i can tell.....LOL, she's paler yellow headed and light gray over the rest of her. ...and is missing a couple toenails from over excited siblings...poor thing...

Lockheed, too, is missing some toenails. Not sure why. So's Freebie, but that was for poor traveling conditions.
