Hello all!
My little avatar is Moxy. She's a maroon bellied conure and the first feathered friend to join our family. She came from a bit of an abuse/neglect situation. Bought from a pet store she spent three days in her shipping container (small cat carrier) only to be returned because "something was wrong with her". She had a neck injury that the pet store treated. (Anyone want to bet the cat carrier was shaken when she started to scream? ) She then spent the next year in the pet store.
She's been with us for one month and has really come out of her shell. Her first choice is to bite if she's unsure but rarely very hard. She says "good morning", and "Moxy Bird". She loves having her head scratched and isn't the least bit afraid of the cats or dogs. She loves baths but not being sprayed. And is a very big fan of bananas. :D
So my question is, what kind of food do you prefer for your conures? I picked up a bag of what she was being fed in the store, but would like to slowly switch her over if there is something better out there. Right now she is on Fiesta blend by Kaytee.
Thanks in advance for any input!

i had a maroon belly about 20 years ago. they are great little parrots. mine was a wild caught(it was legal then and necessary since no one was breeding them). i suggest a very broad diet for your guy. fresh veggies and fruit with a good seed mixture(more safflower seeds and less sun flower seeds). and trying to use foraging items for hiding seeds and treats is a good way to keep them mentally alert and happy.

more pictures of moxy will always be appreciated too.

welcome to the group.

Thanks Jim!
She's on a seed mix now. I hear a lot of folks feeding Zupreem pellets but it just doesn't seem "natural" to me. It seems to me she hasn't been exposed to a lot of fresh foods, everything I give her is approached with a lot of skepticism! But she'll try it all.

pellets are okay as a part of the total diet, but my school of thought is that they should never be the exclusive diet. keep trying all different kinds of fruits and veggies and sooner or later moxy will pick her preferences. my pyrrhura conures liked to bath in the sink with a gentle stream of water flowing, they also seemed to enjoy the colder water as opposed to tepid.

Hi and welcome!
I am not happy feeding all pellets like Jim.
Persevere with fresh stuff, it took me literally years to get Toto to eat brocolli.:rotflmao:

Try him with all the healthy stuff iin your diet, and i'm sure you know AVOID at all costs chocolate, coffee, avacado and alcohol.

Good Luck!

Hello and welcome!

Our parrots get a variety of Roudybush pellets, fresh veggies, and a seed/nut mix that includes dried fruits and veggies - and they don't get all this mixed together every day, but rather, the pellets by themselves, the seedmix/nuts/etc another day, and fresh veggies in the eve when we eat dinner.

You most definitely want to avoid an all-seed diet.

Zupreem pellets are excellent, as are Harrison's and a few other brands.
