Brace yourselves.... bringing home a baby is all new to us - so I'm sure to have 101 questions (some not too bright).

Okay - she's 5 months old. She's at a pet shop, so she's eating mostly seed mixture and pellets right now. When we bring her home, we want to feed her sweet potato mash, 5 grain (hot) cereal, etc. along with her pellets and fresh veggies/fruits. Now, could feeding her mushy stuff possibly set her back ? She's been there for 3 weeks, so I'm not sure how long she's been weaned ...

I'll make this a two-in-one question. Are there any foods I should give her more (or less) of while she's still growing ? More fat, or protien - anything like that ?

Gosh - I feel dumb. :help:

I saw down under species you are bringing home a B&G Macaw congrats they are so much fun, Macaws require more fat in their diet than other birds and do require nuts in their diet, as babies you will have to start out wth unshelled nuts until he or she can crack them in the shell on their own I give my military macaw Walnuts,Pecans,Almonds,Hazel,Macadamia, Pine she gets 1 of each once a day with exception of the pine nuts they are smaller so I give her at least 5-6 of the pine nuts..

Warm soft foods can a be comfort to a youngster coming into their new home, I made warm soft foods for all of mine when they came home..the veggies my birds enjoy are brocolli, carrots, corn, peas, greenbeans, aspragus, brussel sprouts, zucini, zucini squash, acorn squash, butter nut squash, blueberries, apple, banana, mango, papaya, kale, mustard greens, collard greens, endive, bell peppers, jalapeno peppers, sweet potato. I also offer cooked brown rice, wild rice, cous cous, quinoa, beans (from 15 bean soup mix minus the seasoning) I also have the easy to fix cook and serve meals like beak appetite and crazy corn.

OH Sharon you are going to do just fine. It is just like a new baby. Once she is home with you it will all fall into place.

I think the warm food would be fine. It will probably be like comfort food for her. I would try cooked and fresh veg. and see what she likes best. Have you ever tried Sprouts? I didn't think Bacardi would like them because she is so picky about what she eats but she loves them and I feel better giving her sprouts then seed. I give her pellets and frest veg. also. I think the more you can introduce them to at a young age and get them eating a health diet right from the start you will be so much better off.

I don't think they need more or less of anything when they are young. (well except LOVE   ) and I am sure she will get lots of that.

You are not dumb ...... don't be silly. You will feel better once she is home. :agree:

Sharon, first of all,CONGRATULATIONS! You did not mention what species is she? Some different species require different diets. Once we find out the species, we can suggest a healthy diet, some species require different foods, or more of some then another.. Other then that you have been given some great food suggestions.

Ditto what Ginny and Sadenna said on diet. Sadenna has been feeding a variety of baby birds for a long time, including Hyacinth macaws!

Also, what Ginny said about sprouts... take a look at Practical Links and find the info on sprouts... you might have to use the drop-down box and look back 90 days or something... all our birds eat sprouts with their veggies daily, or almost daily, and I use the EasySprout sprouter for growing mine (Practical Links) and I order mine from China Prairie (Pract. Links)

And again, congratulations!

LOL unfortunately our vehicles are the only things other than the house that have any real value..all our furnature is from the 2nd hand store....course now my other problems sure I could get enough for the bird by selling hubby's truck which he would not be to happy with lol ...but then there is the dilema of where to find the money for that stainless steel cage a Hy needs..someday but for now I will have to settle for the once a year Hy experiance..the gal I work for has 4 people for next year that want Hys...hmm 4 should be more fun than 2...lol
